Job Description
The Naval Station Norfolk, located in Norfolk, Virginia, is a vital installation that serves as the home port to the largest naval base in the world. This establishment plays an essential role in supporting the United States Navy's operational capabilities and provides a broad range of services and amenities for military personnel, civilian employees, and visitors. Among its many functions, the station operates various food service operations through the Navy Exchange (NEX). The NEX is a retail and service provider dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for military members by offering convenient access to goods and services on and off base.
Within this context, a part-time position is available for a Mobile Food Service Associate, a role based at NAVSTA Norfolk in Virginia. This position involves preparing and selling a variety of cook-to-order predetermined food menu items on a mobile food truck stationed at Navy Exchange locations and on the Navy base. The role requires a customer-focused approach and the ability to deliver timely food service in a mobile setting, primarily catering to military personnel, civilian staff, and visitors.
The Mobile Food Service Associate is tasked with preparing a diverse range of hot and cold food and beverage items. The menu includes options such as breakfast sandwiches, danishes, fruit, frankfurters, cheeseburgers, quesadillas, chicken and pork BBQ sandwiches, and French fries. This requires operating various food preparation equipment including grills, microwave ovens, convection ovens, and deep fryers while ensuring consistent food quality and presentation. The role also includes handling customer orders, managing cash transactions with adherence to Navy Exchange's cash handling policies, and maintaining cleanliness and organization in the food service environment.
In addition to food preparation and customer service, associates are responsible for stocking and loading food service trucks, driving to designated locations following an established schedule and route on and off the naval installation, and maintaining inventory and operation records. The job may also involve working in a commercial kitchen facility for preparing portioned sandwiches and packaging food items to be cooked or sold from the mobile unit. Food safety and hygiene standards are critical, with associates required to obtain and maintain relevant food handling certifications.
The work conditions include exposure to various temperatures and environments, standing for extended periods, and performing physical tasks such as lifting food containers of up to 45 pounds. Associates must also adhere to traffic safety regulations when driving the mobile food truck and conduct routine vehicle safety inspections. Effective communication and customer service skills are essential to uphold Navy Exchange’s standards, ensuring each customer receives prompt, polite, and professional service throughout their visit.
This part-time position offers a competitive pay rate of $20.82 per hour and requires a valid driver’s license or commercial driver’s license (CDL). Candidates should have at least 18 months of experience in food preparation and serving tasks or equivalent educational substitutions, such as high school education being convertible for months of experience. Due to the nature of the work, physical stamina and the ability to work in varying weather conditions are necessary.
Overall, joining the NAVSTA Norfolk as a Mobile Food Service Associate provides an opportunity to work within a significant military community while contributing to the operational and morale support functions of the Navy Exchange's food services. It is a rewarding role for individuals interested in customer service, food preparation, and working in a dynamic and mobile environment on a Naval base.
