Job Description
NAVSTA Norfolk is a major United States Navy base located in Norfolk, Virginia. As one of the largest naval installations globally, NAVSTA Norfolk supports the operations of the United States Navy's Atlantic Fleet and various military commands. The base hosts numerous activities related to naval operations, logistics, administration, and support services, serving as a critical hub for military readiness and operational efficiency. With a diverse workforce comprising military personnel and civilian employees, NAVSTA Norfolk is committed to providing effective support services that meet the high standards required by the Navy and dependent communities. NAVSTA Norfolk is a key contributor not only to national defense but also to the local economy, making it a significant employer in the Norfolk area. The work environment at NAVSTA Norfolk reflects the disciplined, mission-focused culture of the U.S. Navy, emphasizing teamwork, integrity, and dedication to service.
The current opportunity is for a full-time Food Service Supervisor responsible for managing the operation of mobile food truck services across various local installations under NAVSTA Norfolk. This role involves supervising food service associates typically ranging from NA-2 to NA-5 grades who carry out food service duties including preparation, serving, and sales from a mobile kitchen. This position requires strong leadership skills to coordinate the work assignments, training, and performance of food service staff to ensure smooth and efficient operation of the mobile food service units.
The Food Service Supervisor is tasked with scheduling and planning the sequence of daily operations, establishing priorities, and coordinating with different locations to manage personnel deployment effectively. This position is also responsible for maintaining inventory and ensuring the availability of supplies and equipment necessary for the mobile food truck operations. A crucial part of this supervisory role involves providing excellent customer service consistent with Navy Exchange standards, including maintaining a clean and professional appearance, assisting customers courteously, and promoting food specials.
In addition to operational duties, the Food Service Supervisor prepares reports, manages correspondence related to food service activities, and handles administrative responsibilities such as monitoring employee performance and resolving workplace issues. This role may require the supervisor to step in and oversee all mobile food truck activities in the absence of the primary supervisor, ensuring continuity of service.
Working in this position involves a physically demanding environment where the associate regularly lifts utensils and food containers weighing up to 45 pounds and is required to stand and walk for extended periods. The working conditions may vary from uncomfortable temperatures to exposure to minor injuries, requiring vigilance and adherence to safety procedures. The role also requires a valid driver's license or a commercial driver’s license (CDL) to operate the mobile kitchen vehicle safely.
Candidates with experience in cafeteria or counter-type food services, including preparation and serving, cash register operation, and cleaning duties, will be well-suited for this role. Preference will be given to those with mobile food truck or short order cooking experience. Educational substitutes for experience are accepted, with one year of high school education counting as three months of experience up to a high school diploma or GED equivalency. This position offers a pay rate starting at $25.49 per hour and reflects the importance of quality food services to supporting military personnel and operations at NAVSTA Norfolk.
