Job Description

The Microbiology Research Assistant position at Argonne National Laboratory is a full-time, 40-hours per week role within the Biosciences Division. This is a one-year project where the successful candidate will support research programs funded by national agencies. The primary responsibility will be to provide technical support to the scientific staff by executing experiments and utilizing molecular biology techniques to examine the microbial composition of environmental samples, including topsoil, subsurface habitats, and mammalian gastrointestinal tracts. The role emphasizes high-throughput PCR-based molecular methodologies, demanding precision, organization, and a strong microbiology background.

The position requires hands-on laboratory work, including DNA and RNA extraction from complex samples, PCR setup, reaction analysis, and troubleshooting. Using general laboratory equipment and applying principles of chemistry, sterilization, and quality control are critical components of the duties. Proper documentation using spreadsheets and lab notebooks is essential to maintaining accuracy and advanced record-keeping standards. Job Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in microbiology or related discipline
  • 1-2 years of experience in molecular biology or microbiology research
  • experience with DNA and RNA extraction from complex samples
  • hands-on PCR setup and troubleshooting expertise
  • ability to perform aseptic techniques
  • proficiency with lab equipment such as centrifuges and pipettes
  • strong attention to detail and excellent documentation skills

Job Qualifications

  • B.S. degree in microbiology or related field
  • 1-2 years of relevant microbiology or molecular biology experience
  • experience with molecular biology methodologies including DNA/RNA extraction and PCR
  • strong organizational and record-keeping skills
  • experience with aseptic techniques and general laboratory equipment
  • familiarity with quality assurance and control procedures
  • ability to work independently and in a team environment
