Job Description
Medical Education & Research Institute (MERI) is a non-profit organization dedicated to advancing medical education by providing bio-skills lab environments essential for medical and surgical training. Located centrally in Memphis, TN, MERI plays a vital role in equipping healthcare professionals like physicians and nurses with state-of-the-art, hands-on training. The organization’s unique ability to coordinate all aspects of medical training is enhanced through its exclusive partnership with the Genesis Legacy Whole Body Donation Foundation. This partnership allows MERI to offer unparalleled resources and training experiences involving human cadaveric tissue, supporting the healthcare community nationwide and internationally.
MERI is currently expanding its mobile support capabilities to meet the evolving needs of the medical training industry. They are seeking dynamic, adventurous, and highly motivated individuals for the role of Medical Event Specialist with responsibilities centered around traveling, transportation, and driving. This role involves using MERI-owned vehicles such as box trucks or sprinter vans to travel across the central United States, including Alaska and Hawaii, to set up and manage surgical lab training events in various venues like hotel ballrooms, convention centers, and hospital surgical centers.
The Medical Event Specialist plays a critical role in ensuring that surgical training events run smoothly by unloading and setting up surgical equipment which includes tables, tools, lighting, x-ray machinery, instrumentation, and personal protective equipment. The specialist also provides hands-on support during training sessions, assisting physicians, trainers, and participants. Another vital part of the role includes the careful handling, transport, and care of cadaveric specimens used in these educational events. After the completion of each event, the specialist is responsible for disassembling, cleaning, repacking, and reloading all equipment to ensure it is ready for the next use.
No prior medical experience is necessary for this role, as MERI offers comprehensive training in bioskills techniques, human anatomy, and the technical aspects related to handling surgical equipment and cadaveric tissue. Candidates will receive support and sponsorship to obtain a Class B Commercial Driver’s License, if they do not already possess one, which is required for driving larger transport vehicles. A valid driver's license and clean driving record are essential from the outset.
This position demands significant travel, about 75% of the time, with trips lasting from a few days up to two weeks or more. Flexibility and availability to travel regularly are critical for success. Events typically last 1-2 days, with pre-event setup and post-event breakdown requiring travel days as well. The physical demands include the ability to lift up to 100 pounds and engage in prolonged standing, walking, pushing, and pulling, alongside effective communication skills to coordinate with event teams and sponsors.
Regarding compensation, the starting pay rate is $18.72 per hour, with a higher rate of $21.72 per hour for those holding a Class B CDL. Additionally, there is a $5 hourly travel pay when working offsite, plus a $69 meal per diem for days spent traveling or on events. Overtime is paid at 1.5 times the hourly rate and is common during peak course periods. Performance-based annual bonuses and merit pay increases are also part of the compensation package.
Beyond competitive pay, MERI offers a comprehensive benefits package including medical, dental, vision, life/accidental death and dismemberment (ADD) insurance, short-term and long-term disability insurance, and a 401(k) retirement plan with up to 5% employer match. This role not only offers the opportunity to work with cutting-edge medical training but also to contribute to the advancement of healthcare education in a meaningful and impactful way. Those interested in becoming part of MERI’s mission to support medical professionals and enhance surgical training are encouraged to apply.
