With a commitment to showcasing America’s beauty and history, the company operates modern vessels that accommodate 100 to 200 guests. These vessels sail through some of the most scenic and culturally rich waterways including the East Coast, Alaska, the Pacific Northwest, the Columbia and Snake Rivers, as well as major rivers like the Mississippi, Tennessee, Ohio, and Cumberland Rivers, in addition to the Great Lakes region. American Cruise Lines prides itself on delivering safe navigation and exceptional service, focusing on an intimate cruising experience that highlights quality and a personal touch.

The company values optimism, commitment, patriotism, and merit, which deeply influence its organizational culture and interactions with guests and crew alike. This approach ensures a professional, respectful, and rewarding environment for employees while providing guests with memorable and enriching experiences aboard these fine American ships.

The Mate position at American Cruise Lines is a senior shipboard officer role that reports directly to the Captain. Mates are critical to the operational success of the vessels and bear responsibility for safe vessel operations, compliance with company and regulatory requirements, and serving as professional leaders on board. These officers are experienced mariners with significant piloting expertise in challenging coastal and river waterways and are skilled in team leadership, time management, and risk mitigation.

Mates supervise daily deck teams, help develop piloting expertise across various routes, and ensure all vessel operations proceed safely and efficiently. They play a vital role in maintaining crew discipline and morale, coordinating emergency drills, and upholding the highest standards of cleanliness, sanitation, and onboard comfort for both passengers and crew. Leadership qualities such as prudent decision-making, people orientation, and professionalism are essential attributes for success in this role.

In addition to their operational responsibilities, Mates at American Cruise Lines enjoy comfortable onboard accommodations and chef-prepared meals. The company invests in continuous professional development through its own advanced bridge simulator training, which focuses on honing critical decision-making and advanced piloting skills. This investment underscores American Cruise Lines’ commitment to recruiting and retaining the best maritime professionals in the industry.

The role offers a full-time, exempt employment status with a typical cruise season from March through November. Work schedules generally include six weeks on followed by three weeks off or four weeks on followed by four weeks off, with occasional opportunities for additional work during the off-season on vessels operating or repositioning year-round. This schedule provides a balance of work and personal time, supporting a sustainable career at sea.

Overall, the Mate position at American Cruise Lines is an exceptional opportunity for experienced maritime professionals seeking to advance their careers with a reputable and value-driven company.
