The University Medical Center Phoenix, part of the Banner Health system, is a nationally recognized academic medical center known for its outstanding patient care, research initiatives, and educational programs. The Executive Chef & Manager position at Banner Health plays a critical role in ensuring the highest quality of culinary services within the healthcare setting. This role is responsible for menu and recipe design, food production, catering services at an upscale 4-star level, and the overall presentation and quality of all food orders. The Executive Chef & Manager provides leadership and direction to culinary staff, organizing and managing department operations to deliver outstanding food services to patients, staff, and visitors. The role demands a person with energy, enthusiasm, and a passion for culinary excellence, who can inspire their team and maintain high standards under demanding conditions.

Work hours for this full-time role are Monday to Friday from 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM, with weekends as needed. This role is part of the Facilities, Environmental Services, and Culinary team, contributing significantly to the food service quality and operational efficiency within the hospital environment. The Executive Chef & Manager will handle all aspects of food service production including sanitation, safety, procurement, cost control, and team development.

Job Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience
  • Current ServSafe certificate for food safety or certified food manager license
  • Minimum three years of work experience in culinary roles such as Sous Chef, Baker, Kitchen Manager or catering
  • Proficient in menu design for retail, catering and gourmet dining
  • Continued education in food and nutrition
  • Proficient in common office software including Excel
  • Effective communication and team leadership skills
  • Ability to problem solve
  • Must possess Arizona Fingerprint Clearance Card if working at Banner Behavioral Health Hospital
  • Must sign Arizona Criminal History Affidavit

Job Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience
  • Current ServSafe certificate or certified food manager license
  • Minimum three years of relevant culinary experience including roles such as Sous Chef, Baker, Kitchen Manager, or large scale catering
  • Proficient in menu design for retail, catering, and gourmet dining
  • Skilled in upscale catering and gourmet meal production within minimal timeframes
  • Knowledge of food and nutrition trends and continued training
  • Proficient with common office software including Excel
  • Ability to work with electronic medical record applications
  • Effective communication and team building skills
  • Ability to problem solve with staff, patients, and physicians

Job Duties

  • Provide professional culinary advice and expertise for all food production activities
  • Train, develop, and coordinate culinary activities for production staff
  • Plan new retail concepts and design retail menus
  • Establish quality control standards including ingredient determination and recipe scaling
  • Provide direction for personnel activities such as hiring, training, and skill development
  • Research and produce data for menu decisions and operations budget projections
  • Ensure sanitary practices and quality standards including HACCP compliance
  • Develop food specifications and instruct staff on recipe production
  • Interact with customers including physicians and facility leadership to resolve concerns and provide high-quality catering and retail food services
  • Supervise staff and manage financial control of Food Service department operations
