Job Requirements

  • Formal or informal education or training that ensures the ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance
  • One year of experience in labor or maintenance
  • Valid Class C Texas Driver's License, except for San Antonio Metro Health, Human Services, Library, Pre-K 4 SA, and Solid Waste Management Brush Division
  • Pass CJIS fingerprint-based background check for Building and Equipment Services
  • Pass DFPS fingerprint-based background check for Pre-K 4 SA
  • Willingness to work varying shifts including days, evenings, weekends, and holidays
  • Physical ability to perform manual labor, including lifting up to 50 pounds
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions
  • No felony or serious misdemeanor convictions for certain departments
  • Ability to pass pre-employment drug testing and background checks

Job Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Ability to read and write English
  • One year of experience in labor or maintenance-related work
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively
  • Knowledge of manual labor tasks and safety measures
  • Ability to follow instructions and perform physical job requirements
  • Ability to learn basic laundering techniques where applicable

Job Duties

  • Utilizes maintenance equipment to perform maintenance duties such as sweeping streets, maintaining shrubs and flowers, clearing weeds and brush, mowing and trimming public areas, tree trimming and pruning, performing custodial duties in public areas
  • Cleans, repairs, and replaces equipment at City parks and facilities
  • Prepares City facilities for various City events
  • Participates in the construction, maintenance, and repair of streets, City buildings, and facilities
  • Inspects equipment and reports any equipment in need of maintenance or repair
  • Operates tractor mower, dump truck, and other small equipment
  • Loads trucks with sand, gravel, or waste material using a hand shovel and lifts and carries materials weighing up to 50 pounds
  • Performs related duties and fulfills responsibilities as required
  • Moves, sets up, and takes down tables, chairs, risers, and other related fixtures and equipment for Alamodome and Convention Facilities
  • Performs custodial work in terminals and airport buildings for Aviation department
  • Performs custodial duties including sweeping, mopping, cleaning offices and restrooms in city-owned facilities for Building and Equipment Services
  • Removes graffiti using pressure washing and painting tools for Development Services
  • Cleans and maintains parks, pavilions, and trails for Parks and Recreation
  • Assists with street clean-up, landscaping, concrete reconstruction for Public Works
  • Delivers bulky trash notices, assists unloading deliveries and performs custodial duties in Solid Waste Management
