The Maintenance Technician position is a vital role within the Port's operational framework. This role focuses on performing routine and repetitive maintenance tasks encompassing building repairs, general upkeep, electrical system maintenance, fabrication, landscape care, roadway repairs, marine structure maintenance, remodeling, and construction duties. It demands versatility and skill, as technicians are required to operate a broad range of tools and equipment efficiently and safely. As part of a collaborative maintenance team, the individual will troubleshoot problems, complete detailed reports, and maintain accurate work order systems, all while adhering to strict safety regulations set by WISHA and L&I.

Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • 1.5 to 4 years of relevant construction and repair experience depending on level
  • Valid Washington State driver's license (Level 2)
  • Ability to secure and maintain valid First Aid and CPR certification
  • Ability to obtain Security Identification Display Area (SIDA) and Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) clearances
  • Ability to secure and maintain Flagging, Forklift, and LPG Fueling Certification within 6 months of employment (Level 3)
  • Ability to secure and maintain Commercial Driver's License (CDL), Class A endorsement and Electrical Training Card, Low Voltage (Level 3)
  • Physical ability to work in various weather conditions and perform labor-intensive tasks
  • Strong communication skills
  • Willingness to work flexible hours including potential after-hours call outs
  • Ability to follow workplace safety rules and operate tools and equipment
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team

Job Qualifications

  • 1.5 years of construction and repair experience including plumbing, carpentry, concrete, dock and float repair, fire sprinkler system maintenance, and operation of a variety of construction equipment for Level 2
  • 4 years of construction and repair experience including plumbing, carpentry, concrete, dock and float repair, fire sprinkler system maintenance, and operation of a variety of construction equipment for Level 3
  • Valid Washington State driver's license for Level 2
  • Ability to secure and maintain valid First Aid and CPR certification
  • Ability to obtain SIDA and TWIC clearances
  • Ability to secure and maintain Flagging, Forklift, and LPG Fueling Certification within 6 months of employment for Level 3

Job Duties

  • Troubleshoot problems, collaborate with others, and recommend solutions to reach a successful outcome
  • Maintain accurate and complete records, including work order completion
  • Complete required reports to maintain preventative maintenance schedules
  • May train or direct lower-level employees as assigned
  • Properly operate basic shop tools and equipment
  • Use computerized work order system
  • Understand and follow WISHA and L&I workplace safety rules
  • Monitor and train seasonal staff on basic day-to-day operations such as weeding, watering, mowing, raking, and trash removal
  • Assist senior staff in all trades as needed
  • Respond to after-hours call outs as available and appropriate for the level, such as snow removal or to assist senior staff
  • Perform duties in one or more of the following areas: electrical, facilities, mechanics, and/or grounds
  • Perform routine maintenance tasks related to construction, alterations and repairs within facilities
  • Repair and alter fire sprinkler systems
  • Assist with repairs, alterations and installation work to buildings, structures, irrigation systems and equipment involving carpentry, painting, masonry, plumbing and other manual building trades
  • Help with building repairs and other facilities related maintenance
  • Perform other duties as assigned
