Job Description
The Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) is a vital component of the U.S. Department of Defense, focused on providing efficient and timely logistics support to military forces and other federal agencies. Situated in Richmond, VA, the DLA operates as a competitive service entity with a strong commitment to maintaining a safe, efficient, and dedicated workforce. As a permanent, full-time position, this role offers a competitive hourly wage ranging from $31.73 to $37.02 under the Wage Grade 10 pay scale. The agency emphasizes transparency, fairness, and merit-based hiring through its Direct Hiring Authority under the Defense Industrial Base.
This vacancy involves joining a skilled maintenance team as a Maintenance Mechanic specializing in HVAC and refrigeration systems. The primary focus of the role is to build, inspect, and repair a variety of air conditioning units including large-scale systems up to 160 tons, window units, freezers, humidity control units, walk-ins, and similar equipment crucial for maintaining a controlled environment in critical federal facilities. The position requires a meticulous technician capable of performing on-the-spot repairs, regular inspections for wear or damage, and complex maintenance to ensure operational reliability.
The Maintenance Mechanic will also be responsible for installing, inspecting, and repairing additional mechanical and electrical equipment such as dehumidifiers, commercial freezers, kitchen appliances, and ventilation systems. The role demands physical endurance and technical expertise as the machinery serviced often contains intricate components essential for heat and cooling supply, necessitating a high level of precision and safety awareness. This vocation requires occasional travel and flexibility for emergency responses during natural disasters or crisis scenarios, highlighting its mission-essential designation.
Candidates must be prepared to work in diverse conditions, including outdoor exposure on tall buildings, confined spaces, and locations with high temperatures or toxic refrigerants, necessitating use of specialized protective gear. The job is both physically demanding and technically complex, given the weight and size of equipment handled and the frequency of working at heights or in challenging positions with stooping, bending, and kneeling. The successful individual must possess an EPA certification for refrigeration and air conditioning, a valid driver’s license capable of operating government vehicles from half-ton to one and a half-ton trucks, and universal technician certification.
Additionally, the role is governed by strict compliance and safety standards such as pre-employment physicals, security clearance appropriate for non-sensitive roles, and adherence to drug-free workplace policies. The Defense Logistics Agency prides itself on fostering a work environment that upholds integrity, dedication to public service, and continuous professional development, fostering a career pathway with promotion potential up to grade 10. This opportunity is open to U.S. citizens, nationals, or those who owe allegiance to the United States, emphasizing commitment to upholding the rule of law, American ideals, and the Constitution.
