The Maintenance Mechanic III plays a critical role within the Maintenance Department under the supervision of the Maintenance Team Lead. This position is responsible for maintaining and supporting production by ensuring all equipment operates safely, efficiently, and at the lowest possible cost without compromising quality. Key responsibilities include mechanical repairs, electrical troubleshooting, and adherence to safety standards within a food production environment.
The role requires a deep understanding of mechanical systems such as gearboxes, power drives, pumps, and pneumatic devices, along with proficient skills in stainless steel welding and the repair and installation of various production equipment components. The candidate must also be knowledgeable about hydraulic and pneumatic systems, basic plumbing, electrical systems up to 480 volts, variable frequency drives (VFDs), programming production equipment, and electrical conduit installation while following code requirements.
Safety is paramount, and the Maintenance Mechanic III must be familiar with OSHA, FDA, and GMP requirements, safety devices, hot work permits, forklift and scissor lift operations, and proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE). Job Requirements
- Must be able to rebuild gearboxes power drives and centrifugal pumps and replace mechanical shaft seals
- must be able to install production equipment on elevated platforms
- must be able to weld stainless steel with weld quality acceptable for food grade applications
- must be knowledgeable in liquid pumping principles and able to read pump flow curves
- must be able to repair and rebuild pneumatic hoists
- must be able to time automated equipment drives using vendors manuals and specifications
- must be knowledgeable in the operating principles of hydraulic systems and able to troubleshoot and repair their mechanical components
- must be knowledgeable in the operating principles of pneumatic waste system and able to troubleshoot and repair mechanical components
- must be knowledgeable in mechanical drive fundamentals such as chain drive sprocket and gearbox ratios
- must be able to read piping diagrams and identify the function of various components for air and water distribution systems
- must be able to replace slicer cutter dicer blade assemblies and perform necessary adjustments
- must be able to replace automated equipment mechanical components
- must be proficient in the use of standard hand tools such as wrenches hammers bearing pullers
- must be proficient in the use of simple power tools such as drills grinders cut-off saws impact wrenches
- must be knowledgeable in cleaning and degreasing techniques
- must be knowledgeable in basic plumbing repairs and installation
- must be knowledgeable in programming variable frequency drives
- must be able to read electrical diagrams and identify individual components
- must be able to run electrical conduit and be knowledgeable of code requirements
- must be able to troubleshoot power distribution systems
- must have working knowledge of electrical testing equipment such as multimeter megger etc
- must be able to program simple production equipment such as metal detectors spin dryers
- must be able to troubleshoot systems up to 480 volts with complicated electrical controls and wire 3 phase motors
- must be knowledgeable in equipment safety requirements as they apply to equipment moving and installation
- must be knowledgeable in welding safety practices and hot-work permit requirements
- must be knowledgeable in forklift and scissors lift safety
- must have working knowledge in 480-volt electrical safety practices
- must be able to safely operate shop equipment such as grinders cut-off saws power tools ladders
- must have working knowledge of basic protective equipment requirements as they apply to maintenance personnel
- must be knowledgeable in the proper use of portable fire extinguishers
- must be knowledgeable of safe lifting techniques
- must have working knowledge of OSHA FDA and GMP requirements as they pertain to maintenance activities at a food processing facility
- must be knowledgeable in equipment lock-out tag-out requirements and must not by-pass safety devices under any circumstance
- must be aware of potential hazards such as paper knife cuts slip falls due to wet floors pinch points contusions chemical exposure chlorine back arms legs sprains
- must be able to read and write in English and communicate in Spanish
- must be able to work flexible hours and overtime as required by workload
- must be able to function in a team environment where continuous improvement is expected through communication and cooperation
- must be willing and able to contribute to and implement department programs procedures and systems as needed
- must be able to qualify for forklift and scissors lift drivers license
- must use slip-resistant footwear due to nature of environment wet floors cold and probably some icing debris
- must use wear follow PPE and GMP compliance as needed including hair bear net boots clean smock waterproof rubber gloves plastic sleeves cut resistant gloves eye and hearing protection face shield PPE to handle chemicals when applicable
- must be understand and comply with food safety quality and security protocols
Job Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent
- experience in mechanical and electrical maintenance in a food processing environment
- proficiency in welding stainless steel and repairing pneumatic and hydraulic systems
- knowledge of variable frequency drives programming and electrical troubleshooting
- understanding of safety and regulatory compliance including OSHA FDA and GMP standards
- ability to read piping and electrical diagrams
- bilingual in English and Spanish preferred
- experience in operating forklifts and scissor lifts
- strong teamwork and communication skills
