Job Description

MAKE Projects is a social enterprise restaurant and urban farm located in San Diego, specializing in providing a meaningful and impactful work environment that merges agriculture, kitchens, and employment. This mission-driven nonprofit cafe serves as a unique learning platform for low-income refugee and immigrant women and youth, helping them gain critical social, communication, and job readiness skills through paid real-world work experiences. MAKE Projects operates both an urban farm and cafe, fostering a deep connection between fresh produce and culinary arts while providing employment and training opportunities to empower the community. With a vision to unite San Diegans across social, racial, economic, and geographic divides by sharing a common love of food, flavors, and culture, MAKE Projects believes in the power of food to bring diverse populations together, educate one another about their histories, differences, and similarities, and build stronger community bonds.

The role offered is for a Line Cook based in the Normal Heights neighborhood of San Diego, working morning shifts approximately from 8:30 am to 4:00 pm, under the direct supervision of the Executive Chef. This position is scheduled full-time from Wednesday through Sunday during restaurant service hours of 9 am to 2 pm, with occasional private dinners and special events. At an hourly wage of $21 plus tips, the Line Cook role blends skillful culinary work with opportunities to mentor and support student trainees in a collaborative and community-oriented kitchen environment. This is a fantastic opportunity for a dependable and patient individual with solid kitchen skills who values teamwork and inclusivity.

As a key member of MAKE Projects' kitchen, the Line Cook will execute preparation and service duties for a fast-paced breakfast and lunch cafe, ensuring consistency, quality, and cleanliness on all kitchen stations. The position involves mentoring refugee and immigrant students, supporting kitchen organization, managing prep lists, and maintaining inventory. A strong emphasis is placed on upholding food safety and sanitation standards to guarantee excellent customer experiences. The role demands effective communication skills, the ability to stay organized under pressure, and an interest in contributing to a multicultural environment dedicated to empowerment and learning. MAKE Projects fosters a supportive kitchen culture focused on community connection and growth within a meaningful organization. Benefits include health insurance, paid time off, paid sick leave, and a matching 401k retirement plan after six months of employment, enhancing the overall employment package. This role not only offers the opportunity to produce quality food but also to make a tangible social impact by contributing to the success and development of diverse individuals in the community.
