The position of Cook at Smithfield Station involves preparing a variety of meats, fish, vegetables, soups, and other hot food products while adhering closely to health department regulations concerning food handling, storage, and safety. The role extends beyond cooking to include the preparation and portioning of food prior to cooking, as well as the final plate preparation, including plating and garnishing cooked items. The cook is responsible for ensuring that food is prepared and served timely, maintaining proper temperature controls, and meeting quality standards. They must also uphold the restaurant's standard portion sizes, cooking methods, and kitchen rules and policies.
Key activities involve promoting and practicing the restaurant’s mission, maintaining cleanliness and food safety standards, inspecting and regulating the temperature of food storage areas, rotating food stock properly, and ensuring all food is fresh and prepared to specification. Cooks at Smithfield Station must be skilled in seasoning and cooking food according to recipes, baking, roasting, broiling, steaming, and portioning food expertly. They will also assist in food prep during off-peak periods, substitute for colleagues during peak times, and participate in closing kitchen duties. The role requires a cooperative attitude, as cooks are expected to work closely with fellow employees to support the restaurant’s operations and guest satisfaction.
Smithfield Station uses a wide array of commercial kitchen tools and technology, including blenders, grinders, slicers, broilers, convection ovens, deep fryers, griddles, grills, and steamers. Professional cutlery and specialized knives are also standard in the kitchen to maintain precise food preparation. Additionally, food safety labeling systems and slicing machinery help ensure compliance with safety standards.
This is a full-time position starting at $15 per hour, ideal for individuals with a passion for cooking and a commitment to food safety and quality. The candidate must be physically capable of performing tasks that require bending, lifting up to 40 pounds, and standing for long periods, and be willing to work flexible shifts including evenings, weekends, and holidays.

Job Duties
- Cook meats, fish, vegetables, soups and other hot food products
- prepare and portion food products prior to cooking
- perform food and final plate preparation including plating and garnishing
- follow health department guidelines for food handling and storage
- prepare food in a timely fashion
- maintain cleanliness and food safety in food preparation areas
- regulate temperature of cooking equipment to ensure proper food storage and cooking
- check food freshness and rotate stock
- properly label prepared food and discard after seven days
- comply with standard portion sizes, cooking methods, quality standards and kitchen policies
- follow food specifications and report discrepancies
- maintain food product levels at line stations
- handle and store food products according to restaurant policies
- turn or stir foods for even cooking
- bake, roast, broil and steam various foods
- weigh, measure and mix ingredients according to recipes
- arrange and garnish food according to specifications
- observe and test food doneness
- follow proper plate presentation and garnish set up
- wash, peel, cut and seed fruits and vegetables
- carve and trim meats
- assist in food prep during off-peak times
- substitute for other cooks during emergencies or rush periods
- close kitchen according to checklist
- check out with Manager at end of shift
- attend employee meetings and provide suggestions
