Job Description

The Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry, Bureau of Parks and Lands Division, is a key agency committed to protecting and managing Maine's natural resources while promoting outdoor recreation and environmental stewardship. Among its many responsibilities, the agency oversees the operation and maintenance of state park beaches, ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for visitors. Popham Beach State Park is one of the treasured coastal recreational areas under their management, located in Maine, offering expansive sandy beaches and scenic views, attracting thousands of visitors each season. The Department supports seasonal employment opportunities designed to uphold high standards of visitor safety and park operations, thus enhancing the overall state park experience for all guests.

The role available is for three Seasonal Full-Time Lifeguards positions at Popham Beach State Park for a period of approximately 11 weeks during the summer season from mid-June to late August 2026. Lifeguards are essential team members entrusted with the vital responsibility of ensuring the safety and protection of park visitors at swimming facilities along the beach. This position entails vigilant monitoring to recognize potential dangers and hazards, intervening as necessary to prevent accidents or drowning incidences. Lifeguards work under immediate supervision while exercising independent judgment to apply clear safety rules and guidelines. This role demands a proactive, alert individual who is highly trained in lifesaving, first aid, and CPR techniques. The positions offer an hourly wage range of $15.10 to $18.98 and are seasonal, designed specifically for the busy summer months.

Applicants for these positions must be at least sixteen years of age and possess specific lifeguarding and emergency response certifications, including current Lifeguard Certification, CPR, and First Aid certifications. The Department also requires successful completion of the Lifeguard Academy. Seasonal employees should be prepared to work full-time schedules, often involving 40 hours per week including weekends and holidays when the park sees high visitor volume. Uniforms are provided, and there is an emphasis on teamwork, professional conduct, and a commitment to public safety. The Department promotes a supportive work environment that values personal well-being and professional growth. Additional benefits include competitive compensation, paid holidays, and sick leave specific to state employment.

Popham Beach Lifeguards serve a critical role, directly impacting visitor experiences by fostering a safe and secure environment where families, individuals, and groups can enjoy Maine's beautiful coastline with peace of mind. Being a lifeguard in this scenic but challenging natural environment requires strength, attention to detail, and a heartfelt dedication to service. This employment opportunity also fosters a profound connection to nature and community engagement, making it an ideal job for individuals seeking meaningful summer work.
