Job Description

The University of North Carolina Wilmington, a coastal university in the state, is seeking to hire a Lieutenant for the University Police department. The department aims to provide a safe and secure environment for students, faculty, and staff, with officers empowered with the same authority as local law enforcement officers in North Carolina. The role of Senior Police Supervisors (Lieutenants) involves administrative guidance, backup for supervisory positions, special events planning, training, and more, with a primary focus on managing schedules, evaluating direct reports, and ensuring compliance with policies and regulations. Sworn police personnel are essential for inclement weather and emergencies, carrying out law enforcement duties as assigned, including field assistance as needed.

Job Requirements

  • A minimum of a bachelor's degree and 6 years of sworn law enforcement officer experience or an associate degree and 8 years of sworn law enforcement officer experience
  • At least 3 years of the experience must have been in a supervisory role equivalent to a Police Sergeant or greater. Preferred qualifications include some experience in a campus setting and holding a North Carolina Advanced Law Enforcement Certificate. Certification as a Law Enforcement Officer in accordance with North Carolina Criminal Justice Training and Standards Commission is required or the ability to achieve lateral transfer certification within one year of employment.
