Job Description

American Cruise Lines is a leading cruise line company operating exclusively within the United States, known for offering an intimate and authentic small-ship experience on America’s rivers. With a fleet that includes state-of-the-art riverboats and iconic paddlewheelers accommodating no more than 200 guests, the company is dedicated to delivering exceptional service and memorable voyages. Their continuously expanding fleet means there are frequent opportunities for passionate professionals to join and grow within the organization. Incorporated with deep respect for American heritage and culture, American Cruise Lines distinguishes itself by embracing the rich stories of the country through distinctive travel experiences.

Currently, American Cruise Lines is seeking skilled Lead Sous Chefs to join their culinary team for the exciting 2026 season. This opportunity is perfect for culinary professionals who are passionate about creating top-quality, flavorful dishes while working in a unique environment that blends travel with hospitality. As a Lead Sous Chef, you will be integral in supporting the Executive Chef by crafting diverse and inspired menus, preparing meals for both guests and crew, and ensuring a well-organized and hygienic kitchen. The role demands excellent technical culinary skills, creative flair, and strong leadership capabilities to maintain smooth operations and deliver exceptional cuisine throughout breakfast, lunch, and dinner services.

Working onboard American Cruise Lines’ vessels involves special considerations; since there is no option for dining ashore, your ability to prepare a variety of nutritious, balanced meals that accommodate all dietary restrictions and allergies—especially for the crew—is essential. You will play a pivotal role in creating a positive dining atmosphere that enhances guest experiences and contributes to crew well-being. The position requires dedication to the company’s core values of optimism, commitment, patriotism, and merit, which guide the culture and service standards across all departments.

This full-time, exempt position demands a willingness to live and work onboard for periods of 6 to 8 weeks, followed by time off, with a work schedule that includes 7-day weeks consisting of approximately 12-hour shifts. The physical and operational responsibilities require resilience, adaptability, and strong multitasking abilities, as the environment is influenced by continual ship motion and high-pressure situations. Candidates must possess the required certifications, including ServSafe Manager and Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC), and pass mandatory US Coast Guard pre-employment drug testing.

American Cruise Lines offers a competitive daily rate as compensation, complemented by comprehensive benefits such as health, dental, and vision insurance, along with a 401(k) plan with company match. Additionally, travel, room and board, uniforms, and training costs are covered. Joining the team gives you the chance to contribute to a prestigious culinary operation while exploring the scenic American rivers and participating in an unmatched small-ship cruise experience. This role invites culinary professionals who seek career advancement, value teamwork, and enjoy working in dynamic, diverse settings to apply and share America’s remarkable stories through exceptional cuisine.
