Job Description
Elephant & Co. is a dynamic family of companies deeply rooted in the art and science of fermentation. Since its inception in 2017 in the heart of Detroit's vibrant Eastern Market, this innovative group has grown from its original venture, Eastern Market Brewing Co., into a multi-faceted enterprise that embraces new locations and experimental projects such as the Ferndale Project. Known for a culture built on three core values—Being Intentional, Staying Scrappy, and Spreading Kindness—Elephant & Co. champions both quality and community in its diverse culinary and brewing experiences. As a leader in the fermentation community, the company combines traditional techniques with experimental approaches to deliver unique products, from craft beers to artisanal pizzas, all crafted with meticulous care and passion. Elephant & Co. offers an inclusive, collaborative work environment where creativity and teamwork thrive, supported by a commitment to sustainability and local sourcing whenever possible.
The Lead Line Cook role at Ferndale Project presents an exciting opportunity for culinary professionals aiming to step into a leadership position within a fast-paced, scratch kitchen environment. This role involves overseeing daily kitchen operations while working closely with the Area General Manager on key tasks such as inventory management, ordering, and overall kitchen execution. As a hands-on leader, the Lead Line Cook is responsible for setting a high standard of quality, consistency, and teamwork, fostering a positive work atmosphere that supports both staff and guest satisfaction.
This position requires extensive involvement in the kitchen’s operational flow, including preparing and cooking menu items primarily by grilling, frying, chopping, sautéing, and assembling various dishes. The Lead Line Cook also takes charge of important kitchen procedures such as opening and closing duties, prepping stations, cleaning, and securing food storage areas to ensure the kitchen meets rigorous cleanliness and food safety standards. Moreover, the role demands support in training and coaching junior kitchen staff, promoting professional growth and skill development.
The ideal candidate thrives in a high-volume setting and possesses strong organizational skills, effective communication, and leadership qualities. Additionally, candidates who have experience in dough production and working in scratch-made, from-the-ground-up kitchens will find this position especially rewarding as it offers the chance to influence and mentor others while maintaining the fast-paced rhythm of service. If you are passionate about culinary craft, leadership, and teamwork, the Lead Line Cook position at Ferndale Project aligns perfectly with your career aspirations. Join Elephant & Co. and be part of an innovative company that values hands-on involvement, attention to detail, and a genuine commitment to spreading kindness through exceptional food and beverage experiences.
