Job Description

NC State University, located in Raleigh, NC, is a prestigious public research university known for its commitment to academic excellence, innovation, and community engagement. Within the university’s Campus Enterprises division lies NC State Dining, a vital department responsible for providing exceptional food services across the campus. NC State Dining operates a wide variety of dining venues including 10 cafes, 3 food courts, 6 dining halls, 4 markets, a restaurant, vending services, nutritional counseling, and a catering department. Together, these outlets serve students, faculty, and staff, making a significant impact in enhancing the university experience through quality food and community connection. Employing approximately 1,000 temporary and student workers alongside 180 permanent employees, NC State Dining emphasizes service excellence, safety, and an enriching atmosphere for both employees and customers.

The Lead Food Services Technician role is an advanced-level, full-time position within the SHRA classification band, focusing on leadership and operational excellence in a fast-paced retail food environment. This position is based at Talley Pavilion, one of NC State's bustling retail food locations. Working closely under the unit supervisor, the Lead Food Services Technician serves as the frontline leader, directly managing a dynamic team of student and temporary employees to ensure seamless daily operations. These duties include supervising kitchen workflow, mentoring staff, enforcing stringent food safety standards, and guaranteeing impeccable service quality that aligns with NC State Dining’s high standards. The role demands strong organizational, communication, and leadership skills to foster a positive workplace culture and deliver an outstanding dining experience to every guest.

Candidates should be prepared for a physically active work environment that involves frequent bending, twisting, pulling, pushing, and lifting heavy weights (up to 60 pounds occasionally). Working conditions vary between extremely hot kitchen lines and cold storage areas, requiring adaptability and resilience. This position is classified as a 12-month recurring appointment with a salary range anticipated between $37,440 to $41,245 annually, offering a comprehensive benefits package including medical, dental, vision, retirement programs, life insurance, and paid time off. Job Requirements

  • high school diploma or equivalent
  • proven experience in food service especially in leadership or supervisory roles
  • ability to work 40 hours per week including nights weekends and holidays
  • ability to perform frequent bending twisting pulling and pushing
  • capacity to lift 30 pounds above the head and up to 60 pounds occasionally with or without accommodation
  • ability to work in hot and cold conditions in a fast-paced environment
  • servsafe certification or willingness to obtain within 90 days
  • valid work authorization

Job Qualifications

  • demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work

Job Duties

  • oversee daily unit operations ensuring smooth workflow and maintaining brand standards
  • train mentor and lead student/temporary staff assign daily tasks and ensure all dining services guidelines are followed
  • maintain a culture of safety ensure strict adherence to food safety protocols allergen training guidelines and the proper handling of kitchen equipment
  • provide gold-standard service remaining professional and respectful under the pressure of a fast-paced environment
  • utilize computers and email to manage schedules or learn new software programs as required by the department
  • model the division’s mission and values introduce the division’s mission and values to employees and foster a positive workplace and congeniality among co-workers
  • adhere to all university policies procedures and regulations and division standard operating practices and protocols
