The role of Lead Cashier (LC) at Ulta Beauty is integral to ensuring the efficiency and excellence of guest transactions, maintaining premium cashwrap standards, including cleanliness and visual appeal. This position demands previous cashiering experience and the capacity to assist in training new cashiers and cross-training other associates. The LC must possess the leadership qualities to proactively collaborate, lead, and positively influence peers, driving loyalty results through a keen emphasis on sales performance, guest experience, and loyalty programs. The role supports store leadership with various transactional functions such as opening and closing registers and conducting associate exit inspections while promoting a passion for superior guest service and process excellence.

Additionally, the LC drives key business outcomes by fostering an exceptional guest-friendly environment, engaging with customers to personalize service, recommend products, and support makeup applications, skincare analysis, and product demonstrations. Appointment booking and support during in-store events also fall within the scope, helping create a compelling guest experience that maximizes sales opportunities. The LC takes ownership of organizing and maintaining cashwrap displays and ensuring area readiness.

Beyond operational responsibilities, the LC plays a significant role in cultivating an inclusive and supportive environment for teammates and guests alike. Responsibilities include completing cashier chat-ins and chat-outs, staying informed on industry trends and product knowledge, and sharing the benefits of Ulta Beauty’s guest loyalty program with enthusiasm. The Lead Cashier also ensures adherence to company policies, dress code, operational standards, and security measures aligned with asset protection and loss prevention. Maintaining cleanliness throughout the store—including the sales floor, restrooms, backroom, and employee areas—is an essential duty. This position requires flexibility, great interpersonal skills, and the ability to handle multiple tasks under pressure while delivering an exceptional brand experience. Candidates must be at least 18 years old, be willing to work flexible schedules including days, evenings, weekends, and holidays, and be physically able to meet the mobility and lifting requirements of the role.

Job Requirements

  • At least 18 years of age
  • High school diploma preferred
  • Minimum two years relevant experience preferred
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule including days, evenings, weekends, and holidays
  • Ability to stand, bend, twist, stoop, crouch, reach, and lift up to 25 lbs continuously during shift
  • Adherence to company dress code and policies
  • Ability to efficiently complete all transactions and maintain cash control
  • Willingness to participate in ongoing training and development
  • Demonstrated ability to provide exceptional guest service and promote loyalty programs
  • Must comply with workplace safety, inventory control, and loss prevention standards

Job Qualifications

  • High school diploma preferred
  • Two years of relevant work experience or equivalent combination of education and experience preferred
  • Proven ability to delegate, multi-task, and problem-solve
  • Demonstrated passion and knowledge of guest service and sales
  • Experience addressing guest concerns professionally and promptly
  • Proven record of exceeding sales goals and training new hires
  • Proficient with basic technology, such as Point of Sale systems and Apple devices
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong collaboration and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Ability to build and maintain strong customer relationships
  • Ability to react under pressure and adapt to change

Job Duties

  • Contribute to meeting or exceeding the store’s goals related to retail and service sales, omni-channel, guest loyalty (including credit), and retail shrink
  • Ensure each guest receives exceptional service by greeting and engaging each guest, personalizing service, and recommending products or services
  • Courteously handle sales, refunds, and exchanges
  • Pair guests with associates for makeup applications, skincare analysis, and product demonstrations to drive sales and guest experience
  • Book appointments and support execution of services and in-store events delivering an unrivaled guest experience while achieving sales goals
  • Take ownership over replenishment, organization, and maintenance of cashwrap displays, supplies, and impulse fixtures
  • Support leadership with register open and close functions, associate exit inspections, and cashier chat-ins and chat-outs
  • Maintain outstanding store standards and overall store cleanliness including cashwrap, salesfloor, restrooms, backroom, and break areas
  • Ensure compliance with company policies, procedures, and dress code
  • Assist in training and cross-training cashiers and associates
  • Share and promote guest loyalty programs including credit and app
  • Participate in ongoing training to enhance sales performance
  • Collaborate with team members to grow the business
  • Drive cashier accountability in delivering a personalized Ulta Beauty brand experience
  • Protect company assets and minimize loss through adherence to safety, inventory control, and loss prevention protocols
  • Execute other operational tasks as directed
