Job Description

The Salvation Army Hospitality House located at 1002 N. Main Ave., Tucson, AZ, operates as a critical support facility dedicated to serving shelter clients with compassion and dedication. As part of the international movement and evangelical branch of the universal Christian church, The Salvation Army upholds its mission to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ by meeting human needs in His name without discrimination. This mission extends into every aspect of its operations, including its Hospitality House, which offers essential shelter and support services to vulnerable populations within the community. The organization values a commitment to service and upholding Christian principles while fostering an environment of care and respect for all individuals who seek help.

The Hospitality House functions not only as a shelter but also as a place where individuals receive nourishment, hope, and the assurance that they are not alone. The Kitchen Supervisor plays a pivotal role in this environment by managing kitchen operations that are vital to the well-being of the shelter clients. This full-time, non-exempt position operates on a unique schedule from Monday through Wednesday, 9:30 am to 6:00 pm, and Thursday through Friday, 5:00 am to 1:30 pm, ensuring that meal preparation and food service meet the needs of the community throughout the week.

The Kitchen Supervisor is responsible for overseeing kitchen staff, planning and preparing daily meals, maintaining inventory, and coordinating special holiday meals and events held at the shelter. In this capacity, the supervisor ensures the quality, nutrition, and safety of the meals served to clients. This role requires hands-on supervision and direct involvement in meal preparation to guarantee that every client receives healthy, hearty, and flavorful food. Menu development incorporates donated food items alongside other supplies, maintaining a balance of nutrition while managing budgetary constraints responsibly.

Additionally, the Kitchen Supervisor is tasked with training and orienting staff and volunteers, supervising their performance, and making recommendations regarding staffing decisions including hiring and disciplinary actions in conjunction with the Human Resources Manager. This leadership position demands excellent communication skills, initiative, flexibility, and a positive attitude to navigate the dynamic environment of a shelter kitchen. The supervisor must ensure strict compliance with public health standards and agency guidelines to maintain a safe and sanitary food service operation.

Day-to-day duties also include managing inventory by overseeing deliveries, organizing food storage with proper dating and first-in-first-out usage, and ensuring that all food service equipment is cleaned and maintained at a high standard. The Kitchen Supervisor actively participates in special community meal events like Christmas, Thanksgiving, and Easter, offering additional support to address increased demand during these times.

This position requires a valid City of Tucson Food Handlers Permit or Serve Safe Certificate, or immediate attainment upon hire, along with CPR/First Aid certification obtained within 90 days of employment. A successful background clearance and a valid Arizona State Driver's License are mandatory. The role demands physical capabilities such as lifting and moving heavy objects regularly, with a weight range extending up to 100 pounds occasionally. The Kitchen Supervisor is expected to work effectively both independently and as part of a team, contributing to the success of the Hospitality House’s mission to serve those in need.
