Job Description
HOPE, Inc. is a dedicated peer support organization committed to serving the behavioral health community. This organization plays a vital role in providing supportive services to individuals recovering from behavioral health conditions and substance abuse issues. HOPE, Inc. fosters a welcoming and culturally competent environment where members receive essential support and resources tailored to their unique journeys toward recovery. The Kitchen Porter at HOPE, Inc. operates under the direct supervision of the Site Coordinator and is a crucial team member responsible for various operational and kitchen-related duties on-site. This full-time role involves preparing and cooking meals, supporting site operations, and providing transportation for members and goods while maintaining high standards of cleanliness and safety across the facility. The Kitchen Porter is not only a food service expert but also an integral part of the operational framework that supports HOPE’s mission to enhance the health and well-being of vulnerable adults.
In their daily responsibilities, the Kitchen Porter cooks hot breakfasts and lunches for 55 or more members, plans weekly meals, and ensures that the kitchen is maintained, clean, and organized. They work collaboratively with the Site Coordinator to order supplies and arrange maintenance for kitchen appliances, holding or obtaining a Kitchen Manager Certification (Serve Safe) within 30 days of hire. Beyond cooking, they instruct members on cooking and nutrition skills, manage a monthly budget for food and supplies, and help coordinate the distribution of food boxes from donations.
The role requires exceptional organizational skills, a commitment to maintaining a safe and sanitary environment consistent with healthcare standards, and the ability to perform multiple operational support functions, including janitorial services and front desk coverage. The Kitchen Porter is also responsible for transporting members to various appointments and services, completing necessary documentation, and ensuring vehicles and facilities meet safety and cleanliness standards.
A successful candidate must be culturally competent and adept at communicating effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds. They must promote HOPE, Inc.'s services positively in the community and to prospective funding sources, while upholding confidentiality laws related to protected health information. Certification maintenance and adherence to health and safety regulations, such as bloodborne pathogen precautions and CPR/First Aid (preferred), are also essential aspects of the role.

Job Requirements
- Peer - individuals must have first- hand knowledge of a behavioral health condition or substance abuse issue, whether they received treatment or medication or identify as a family member of someone in recovery
- Must be at least 21 years of age per licensing requirements
- Effective oral and written communications skills
- Must possess basic computer skills in order to maintain compliance with required online trainings and documentation
- Current CPR and 1st Aid certification preferred within first 90 days of employment
- Negative TB test results within the last year
- Must have a driver's license with a clean MVR for the last 39 months
- Must be comfortable working in a behavioral health setting and able to comply with laws related to confidentiality and handling of protected health information (PHI)
- Must be able to lift at least 25 pounds
Job Qualifications
- Kitchen Manager Certification (Serve Safe) required within 30 days of hire
- Experience cooking for large groups
- Experience managing budgets and ordering supplies
- Experience teaching cooking or nutrition skills preferred
- Ability to work collaboratively with multiple teams and departments
- Strong customer service and communication skills
- Committed to cultural competency and diversity
- Knowledge of health and safety regulations relevant to food service environments
- Familiarity with behavioral health peer support principles
Job Duties
- Cooks hot breakfast and lunch for 55 or more members each day
- Plans meals to be prepared on a weekly basis to send out to members and staff
- Keeps kitchen maintained, clean and organized
- Works with Site Coordinator to order any supplies, and schedule regular maintenance needed for kitchen appliances
- Holds Kitchen Manager Certification (Serve Safe) within 30 days of hire
- Teach cooking and nutrition skills to members as needed or appropriate
- Works with other teams and departments to provide food boxes as donations are available
- Manages a monthly budget for supplies and food
- Provides support to the Site Director with operations and functions including cooking for members, backup front desk coverage, janitorial services, transporting members, and other support functions as needed
- Provides excellent customer service to members and staff
- Provides transportation to members to appointments, site services, crisis services, etc.
- Completes documentation including billing for transportation and other peer support services
- Coordinates with facilities to reserve vehicles and coordinate use
- Ensures vehicles are maintained and routinely checked for safety
- Ensures HOPE facilities including restrooms are safe and clean to use by maintaining appropriate sanitation and health standards in accordance with the local health department
- Maintains high standards of health and cleanliness consistent with a healthcare facility that serves vulnerable adults
- Follows proper precautions related to blood borne pathogens and maintains training compliance
- Follows the health requirements per the agency and governmental regulations
- Uses HOPE fleet vehicle to pick up supplies, items from the Community Food Bank, wholesale food stores, and more
- Greets program participants and visitors at time of arrival and departure
- Works with other teams and departments to provide food boxes as donations are available on location and center specific protocols
- Demonstrates a commitment to cultural competency by interacting effectively and comfortably with people from different cultures and developing communication skills to interact sensitively with individuals from diverse backgrounds
- Promotes HOPE, Inc. as the premier peer support organization to the behavioral health community and prospective funding sources
- Represents HOPE, Inc. in its vendor relationships with government agencies, the media, community organizations, suppliers, competitors, professional organizations and similar groups as set forth by the CEO
- Maintains all certifications required for the position
