Job Description
Sababa Beachaway is a vibrant co-ed residential summer camp nestled in Virginia Beach, Virginia, dedicated to offering a unique blend of Jewish cultural enrichment and outdoor adventure for rising 4th through 12th graders. The camp immerses campers in the natural beauty of the beach environment while integrating meaningful Jewish spiritual practices, fostering a community that respects and celebrates diverse Jewish backgrounds. At its heart, Sababa Beachaway embraces the concept of "Sababa," meaning 'no worries,' inspiring campers and staff to fully engage with each moment with joy and presence. The camp's focus on ocean-related activities such as surfing, sailing, scuba diving, ocean arts, and ocean science nurtures campers' sense of wonder, curiosity, and awe, which are central to the experience and philosophy known as Sababa Judaism.
This summer camp is supported by Commonpoint, a community-centric nonprofit organization committed to serving diverse populations throughout all stages of life across the New York metropolitan area. Commonpoint provides vital social services and enriching programs, including summer camps like Sababa Beachaway, promoting connection, growth, and inclusion among its clients and communities.
The position available is for a Kitchen Manager/Mashgiach at Sababa Beachaway, a role critical to maintaining the camp’s high standards of food safety, kashrut compliance, and quality meals. This is an in-person, live-in seasonal role spanning approximately 7.5 weeks, from mid-June to early August. The Kitchen Manager works in close collaboration with the Executive Chef and Operations Director, responsible for overseeing the operation and management of the kitchen facility, ensuring that three buffet-style kosher meals are prepared and served each day to roughly 110 campers and 25 staff members for six days each week. Beyond meal preparation and service, the role demands diligent management of kitchen sanitation, organization, and compliance with the kosher dietary laws under the supervision of the VAAD of Tidewater.
In this leadership role, the Kitchen Manager oversees ordering and inventory management, verifying that all food products and supplies meet kosher requirements by coordinating with approved vendors. The position also includes logistical responsibilities, such as coordinating kitchen setup and breakdown at the start and end of camp season. Additionally, the manager ensures emergency preparedness by understanding and implementing appropriate action plans when necessary.
Ideal candidates bring at least three years of experience in camp or institutional food service or high-volume professional kitchen management. Certification as a ServSafe Food Manager is required, and experience or certification as a Mashgiach or experience managing a kosher dining facility is highly advantageous. The Kitchen Manager must exhibit strong organizational, supervisory, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities independently and effectively while fostering a positive, collaborative camp environment.
Physical demands include continuous standing, walking, manual labor, and lifting up to 50 pounds, working both indoors and outdoors. This role thrives on adaptability, patience, and a sense of humor to meet the dynamic needs of a lively summer camp.
Compensation ranges from $4,500 to $6,000 per month, depending on experience, with meals and housing included during the camp season. The position is non-union and requires on-site residency throughout the camp dates, from June 23rd to August 2nd, 2026. This is an extraordinary opportunity to contribute to a well-respected Jewish summer camp community dedicated to nurturing young campers through engaging, meaningful experiences in a supportive, fun environment.
