Established with a commitment not only to business success but also to fostering a community where employees can thrive, BGC prides itself on creating a supportive and inclusive work environment. For those joining BGC, this is more than just a job—it is an invitation to belong to a community that supports your goals and celebrates your wins. Employees enjoy comprehensive benefits such as medical, vision, dental, and prescription coverage; paid time off to recharge; a 401(k) plan with company contributions; exclusive employee discounts; scholarships and educational support; and access to a 205-acre outdoor recreation area.
The role of Cook at Brookshire Grocery Company involves preparing and cooking food by following basic to complex established recipes, ensuring that meals meet the exact specifications set by the chef in terms of quality, taste, and presentation. This position requires dedication to food safety and quality standards and maintaining product freshness by monitoring stock levels and storage conditions. Cooking team members assist with a variety of kitchen tasks, including slicing, weighing, packaging, labeling, pricing, and arranging product displays to maintain an appealing environment for customers. The Cook plays a vital role in maintaining a clean, safe, and sanitary workspace, adhering strictly to company safety procedures. A friendly and customer-oriented attitude is essential, as the position involves greeting customers, answering questions, and fulfilling special order requests both in person and by phone. Additionally, Cook employees are encouraged to promote product sales through suggestive selling techniques that enhance the customer experience.
This position demands basic mathematical skills to accurately follow recipes and the ability to operate kitchen equipment safely and effectively, such as commercial ovens and meat/cheese slicers. Employees must be adaptable, capable of learning new systems or processes, and skilled in using various hand tools. Teamwork and effective communication are key components, as Cooks frequently interact with fellow partners and customers. The ability to work flexible schedules, including nights, weekends, and holidays, is required. Safety awareness is vital; employees must be attentive to potential hazards and take appropriate action or notify supervisors as needed.
Physical demands include continuous use of vision and hands, prolonged periods of standing or walking, and frequent bending, kneeling, and lifting of items up to 40 lbs, occasionally heavier. The work environment typically involves exposure to temperature extremes, wet or slippery surfaces, sharp equipment, cleaning agents, and varying noise levels, all within a retail store setting.
Ideal candidates for this position are at least 18 years old and must hold a Food Handler certification. On-the-job training is provided to ensure that new team members are well-equipped for success. Those who are 21 or older may also have the opportunity to drive for Company business in alignment with BGC's Business Driver Policy. Brookshire Grocery Company is an Equal Opportunity Employer committed to diversity and inclusion, ensuring fair employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, disability, genetic information, military status, or other protected characteristics. This role offers a chance to build a meaningful career in a company that values safety, community, and personal development.
