Job Description
The Community Center is a dedicated nonprofit organization committed to providing essential support and services to vulnerable populations, particularly individuals who are homeless or living in poverty. Known for its community-focused approach, the center operates multiple programs aimed at enhancing the quality of life for those in need by offering meals, shelter, and other vital resources. At the heart of the center’s operations is its kitchen, which serves as a critical hub for meal preparation and distribution, largely facilitated through the efforts of volunteer groups.
This role is integral to the smooth functioning of the Community Center’s kitchen operations. The position involves supporting volunteer meal serving groups, assisting with inventory management, cleaning, and food preparation, and working collaboratively with the Community Center team to follow and improve existing routines and systems through problem-solving. Under the guidance of the Kitchen Manager, the role requires setting up ingredients and supplies, ensuring the kitchen is maintained in a clean and sanitary condition, and helping prepare daily meals including sack lunches and food baskets.
The role demands a hands-on individual who is capable of managing multiple daily cleaning tasks such as maintaining cleanliness of the griddle, ovens, stovetop, and shelving. Additionally, responsibilities include assessing daily needs for various food supplies and assisting with proper storage and rotation of inventory, including accepting deliveries and donations, managing fresh and frozen foods, and timely sorting and storing of these items. This position requires attendance at meetings as needed to maintain cohesive communication within the team.
Ideal candidates for this position will have the ability to work effectively under deadlines both independently and in a team environment. Strong customer service skills, excellent communication, organizational and time-management abilities are essential. Due to the physical nature of the job, the ability to stand for extended periods is required. Candidates should have work or life experience that aligns with the Community Center’s mission and philosophy and a genuine interest in helping people who are homeless or impoverished. Patience and a good sense of humor are valuable qualities.
Preference is given to candidates with professional food-service experience, experience in nonprofit or social service settings, and those who possess or are willing to obtain Serv-Safe certification. The role is well-suited for individuals passionate about community service and eager to contribute to a cause that directly impacts lives. This position offers an opportunity to be part of a compassionate team striving to support and uplift disadvantaged community members through dedicated service and collaboration.
