Job Description
Winterthur Museum, Garden & Library is a premier cultural institution located on a breathtaking 1,000-acre estate in the United States, renowned for its unrivaled collection of American decorative arts housed within an elegant mansion and galleries. The institution also features a magnificent 60-acre naturalistic garden, which offers visitors an immersive experience into the beauty of horticulture and landscape design. Winterthur enriches the cultural fabric through its multifaceted functions which include curatorial management, horticulture, education, conservation, library services, maintenance, marketing, development, technology, and administration. The institution values its staff and volunteers as its greatest assets, fostering a work environment built on core values such as agility, excellence, innovation, integrity, inclusion, and transparency. Winterthur offers not only a rich cultural and natural environment but also an opportunity to contribute to its mission of inspiring, enlightening, and delighting its visitors while preserving and enhancing its unique offerings.
The position open is for a General Services Aide focused on janitorial services and assorted support duties across the Winterthur facilities. This role holds significant responsibility for maintaining cleanliness, hygiene, and order in all areas of the institution to ensure both visitor and staff satisfaction. Among the tasks, the General Services Aide will perform regular janitorial duties including trash collection, vacuuming, carpet cleaning, mopping, dusting, and furniture care while managing cleaning solutions safely. The aide also plays a crucial role in upholding sanitation standards in employee and public spaces to adhere to health guidelines such as those issued by OSHA and the CDC, particularly concerning infectious disease prevention protocols including COVID-19 safety measures.
In addition to routine cleaning and sanitation, the General Services Aide assists with event set up and take down, supporting the smooth execution of events by arranging furniture and equipment as needed. This position demands physical stamina, as duties include bending, stretching, lifting up to 50 pounds, stair climbing, and extended periods of standing or walking, indoors and outdoors. The work schedule is Tuesday through Saturday, with a commitment of 35 hours per week, and an hourly wage of $17.00. The institution values work-life balance and offers a comprehensive benefits package, including medical, dental, and vision insurance, a generous paid time-off plan with 10 holidays and vacation time, 403b retirement with employer match, store and café discounts, and free admission for employees and their immediate families.
This role is ideally suited for candidates with prior janitorial experience, preferably two years or more, combined with a high school diploma or equivalent. Candidates with experience in hospitality or cultural institutions are highly desirable. Knowledge of housekeeping operations, sanitation requirements, cleaning chemical applications, and carpet cleaning are essential for success. The candidate should demonstrate initiative, problem-solving ability, and a proactive approach to maintaining facility standards. Overall, this position provides a rewarding opportunity to contribute to a prestigious cultural and educational institution dedicated to preserving and sharing American heritage in a setting of natural beauty.
