Job Description
The University of Houston is a major public research university located in Houston, Texas. Known for its diverse student population and commitment to access and excellence, it is part of the University of Houston System and offers a wide range of undergraduate and graduate programs. The university strives to foster a vibrant educational community by supporting international students and scholars through its dedicated International Student & Scholar Services Office (ISSSO). This office plays a pivotal role in enhancing the university's global engagement, supporting the cultural, educational, and social integration of international students and visiting scholars. The International Programs Manager position is a full-time role within this office, aimed at managing and coordinating a variety of programs that promote cross-cultural understanding and student success.
The role of the International Programs Manager is central to the University of Houston’s mission to create an inclusive and supportive environment for its international community. This position is responsible for planning, developing, and administering complex programs that facilitate international students' and scholars' academic and cultural experiences. The manager oversees daily operations, coordinates events, supervises staff and student workers, and manages fiscal activities related to programming. With a salary range of $49,400 to $56,200, this position requires a proactive leader who can conceptualize and implement innovative cultural and educational initiatives.
Key responsibilities include managing significant university events like International Education Week and running ongoing mentorship and friendship programs designed to foster meaningful connections among students. The manager also handles marketing and communications efforts for these programs, employing both traditional and digital media to maximize awareness and participation. Budget oversight and vendor coordination are part of the financial administration duties, ensuring programs operate efficiently within allocated resources. Furthermore, this role serves as an advisor to the International Student Organization, promoting student inclusion and engagement.
The International Programs Manager acts as a liaison between the ISSSO and other university departments, student organizations, and community partners. Through these collaborative efforts, the manager helps enhance intercultural engagement opportunities and supports continuous improvement in international programming. The position demands analytical skills for preparing reports and assessments to guide leadership decisions, along with the ability to represent the ISSSO in university-wide committees focused on student belonging and global initiatives. This role occasionally requires evening or weekend work, reflecting the nature of international programming and events.
This position is vital in maintaining the university's welcoming and culturally rich environment. Applicants should bring a strong foundation in managing programs, budgets, and teams within an educational or similar setting, complemented by a commitment to fostering global citizenship and cross-cultural dialogue. Experience with social media and digital content strategy is also essential, as the manager oversees the office's digital presence to engage the international community effectively. The University of Houston values diversity and inclusiveness and encourages applications from candidates who are dedicated to these principles. All candidates must undergo a criminal history check as part of the hiring process, in line with the university's security-sensitive policies.
