Job Description
The Student Conservation Association (SCA) is a renowned non-profit organization dedicated to developing the next generation of conservation leaders through hands-on environmental stewardship. With a focus on meaningful service in public lands, the SCA partners with national parks, forests, and communities to provide impactful conservation opportunities. The organization champions values such as teamwork, inclusivity, and respect and maintains a supportive work environment that nurtures personal and professional growth. Through their diverse programs, SCA fosters a strong connection between young adults and the natural world, encouraging careers in conservation and environmental sciences.
This Recreation Crew Member position is based within the Mt. Baker Ranger District in Sedro-Woolley, WA, and Glacier, WA, offering a unique summer experience from May 25, 2026, through September 11, 2026. This role provides participants with exposure to a variety of USDA Forest Service career opportunities, specifically focusing on protecting and maintaining national forest resources. Interns will work as part of a team to prevent resource damage, minimize sanitation impacts, and reduce environmental footprints in high-use recreational areas.
Responsibilities include front country developed site maintenance, wilderness and trail project work, and community engagement through visitor information dissemination. Interns will interact directly with visitors at ranger district offices, visitor centers, and in the field at trailheads and high-use trails, educating them on Leave No Trace principles and forest regulations. This role is ideal for individuals passionate about conservation, outdoor work, and public outreach, offering hands-on experience with forest management practices and trail maintenance.
Participants will receive comprehensive training in areas such as bear safety, defensive driving, first aid/CPR, and interpretive skills, equipping them with essential professional skills for future environmental careers. The position requires flexibility, dependability, and excellent communication skills to effectively engage forest visitors and work cooperatively within a team environment.
The internship provides a weekly living allowance of $750, free housing in shared accommodations, up to $450 in per diem for camping when required, and a $1,300 relocation travel allowance. Housing arrangements include shared bedrooms and communal living spaces like kitchen, living room, dining area, and bathrooms. A personal vehicle is mandatory due to the remote location and limited access to public transportation. Interns work 40 hours per week during the scheduled period. This SCA position is authorized under the Public Land Corps Authority, and applicants must be U.S. citizens, nationals, or lawful permanent residents between the ages of 16 and 30 (or veterans age 35 or younger). The hours served can be applied toward Public Land Corps hiring authority.
Overall, this role offers an invaluable opportunity for young individuals eager to gain practical experience in natural resource management, environmental education, and recreational site maintenance within a stunning national forest setting. It encourages the growth of conservation ethics while providing essential skills and knowledge to foster future career paths in the natural resources sector.
