Job Description

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is a premier government institution dedicated to serving the healthcare needs and overall well-being of veterans and their families. Among the many services the VA provides, Environmental Management Services (EMS) plays a critical role in maintaining safe, clean, and well-organized medical environments across VA medical facilities nationwide. Situated within these EMS operations, the VA Medical Center in Salt Lake City, Utah, offers a career opportunity for individuals committed to excellence in environmental and housekeeping services that directly support patient care and safety.

The VA Medical Center's EMS department is responsible for a plethora of environmental care duties, from textile distribution and sanitation to training and scheduling, all aimed at fostering an environment conducive to healing and excellent patient care. The department ensures that the facilities maintain compliance with established policies and meet the highest standards of cleanliness and safety for veterans and their families.

The position of Housekeeping Aid Supervisor (PD99911S) within the EMS team is a vital leadership role. It requires the exercise of technical and administrative supervision over a team of Housekeeping Aid Environmental Services (HKA-EVS) Technicians. This role demands a keen ability to oversee and coordinate the daily operations of housekeeping services, including cleaning patient areas, corridors, operating rooms, and other critical spaces throughout the VA Medical Center. The Supervisor ensures that all aspects of the environmental services are performed efficiently, economically, and in line with the policies set forth by higher levels of management.

This supervisory position involves important tasks such as reorganizing work schedules to meet priorities, coordinating efforts with supervisors of other departments to avoid disrupting patient care, training staff on patient-centered care principles, and assuring adherence to safety regulations within the cleaning and environmental maintenance processes. The incumbent will also be responsible for approving leave requests, counseling employees, recommending disciplinary action when necessary, and performing formal performance appraisals. A significant part of the role also includes maintaining clear communication lines within the team and with other service departments to manage potential relocations, remodeling, or adjustments to work schedules as needed.

The physical demands of this role are substantial, requiring continuous walking, standing, stooping, kneeling, pulling, and pushing. The use of heavy powered cleaning equipment such as industrial buffers and wall washers is common, necessitating dexterity, coordination, and keen attention to visual cleanliness standards.

This full-time permanent position offers a salary range of $28.75 - $33.54 per hour under the WS-2 pay scale with no promotion potential beyond the full performance level. Though not telework eligible, the position provides meaningful work in a team-oriented environment dedicated to serving the veteran community. The work schedule spans all shifts, including first, second, and third shifts, ensuring continuous and consistent facility management.

Candidates interested in this role should be U.S. Citizens, Nationals, or those who owe allegiance to the U.S. The VA also provides priority consideration for federal employees eligible under Career Transition Assistance Plans (CTAP, ICTAP, RPL). The Department values applicants who demonstrate commitment to the efficiency of federal government operations, dedication to American ideals, and adherence to federal employment policies, including required background checks and compliance with health and safety mandates.

This position offers a 25% recruitment incentive and comprehensive federal benefits, making it an attractive opportunity for experienced personnel passionate about impactful work in public service. This role is essential in ensuring the facility's operation aligns with the highest standards of environmental care, indirectly improving the overall experience for veterans and healthcare providers alike. Joining the VA in this capacity means becoming part of a dedicated, mission-driven workforce prioritizing health, safety, and patient-centered care.
