Job Description
The Nebraska-Western Iowa Healthcare System, part of the VA Midwest Health Care Network, is a dedicated healthcare facility serving veterans in Omaha, Nebraska, and the surrounding regions. The agency operates with a strong commitment to providing exceptional health care through a comprehensive Whole Health System that empowers veterans to take charge of their health and live their lives fully. This healthcare system integrates personalized care plans developed within healing relationships and environments, all while maintaining a strong connection between veterans and their communities. The facility emphasizes upholding the mission of the Veterans Health Administration to honor America’s veterans with superior medical services that enhance their health and well-being.
Within this context, the position of Housekeeping Aid Leader is a critical role within the Environmental Management Services (EMS) department, supporting the broader mission of the healthcare system by ensuring high standards of cleanliness and sanitation throughout the facility. This is a full-time, permanent position based in Omaha, NE, with a competitive pay scale ranging from $19.86 to $23.17 per hour at the WL-2 grade level. The Housekeeping Aid Leader supervises and leads a team of housekeeping aides, overseeing floor maintenance tasks and ensuring quality standards are met. The role involves substantial physical labor, including moving furniture and equipment, lifting heavy items up to 50 pounds, and operating specialized EMS equipment over extended periods.
In addition to direct supervision, the Housekeeping Aid Leader is responsible for training staff using approved housekeeping procedures, developing training materials for housekeeping and linen tasks, and accurately communicating supervisory instructions to avoid confusion in job performance. The role requires keen attention to detail, including inspecting the work for sanitation quality, identifying and properly disposing of biohazard waste, and ensuring compliance with infection control protocols. The leader plays a vital role in interacting with customers, including veterans, their representatives, visitors, and other VA staff, treating all with courtesy, tact, and respect.
Working conditions include satisfactory ventilation and environment, despite occasional exposure to noise, skin irritations, and minor injuries. Continuous physical activity such as walking, standing, stooping, twisting, bending, and strenuous efforts are integral to the job. Although this position is not virtual and does not offer telework eligibility, it is an essential part of the Veteran's healthcare environment, contributing directly to the comfort and safety of patients and staff alike. The position supports the collective goals of the VA Midwest Health Care Network and complies with federal employment standards, including selected hiring authorities and veterans’ consideration policies.
