Job Description

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Northern California Healthcare System is dedicated to providing comprehensive healthcare and support services to veterans and their families. Located specifically within the Environmental Management Services Division at the Stockton VA Medical Center in Stockton, California, the VA Northern California Healthcare System is a crucial part of the nationwide VA network committed to enhancing the quality of life for veterans through world-class medical care and facility maintenance. As a federal agency, it operates under rigorous standards to ensure that all facilities are safe, clean, and conducive to healing and recovery for its patient population. The Environmental Management Services Division plays an essential role in this mission by maintaining clinical and non-clinical spaces in an immaculate and safe condition, facilitating the overall patient care environment and experience.

This particular position is for a Housekeeping Aid located within the EMS Division, reporting directly to the Housekeeping Supervisor or their designee. The role focuses on delivering a broad range of routine housekeeping tasks critical to the cleanliness and safety of the healthcare environment. The Housekeeping Aid contributes significantly to the care experience for veterans by maintaining patient rooms, hallways, restrooms, offices, and other facility areas to the highest cleanliness standards. Responsibilities include both light and heavy cleaning duties such as sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, polishing floors, managing waste disposal, and replacing light bulbs. The role requires physical stamina for tasks like climbing small ladders to clean ceilings and windows and rearranging furniture to ensure thorough cleaning.

The position is a permanent, full-time federal role with a pay scale of WG 2 and a salary range between $21.67 and $25.24 per hour, with promotion potential to grade 2. The work schedule varies and includes rotating weekends and holidays, reflecting the continuous nature of healthcare operations. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or nationals and are subject to federal employment suitability checks, including background investigations and drug screening. The VA emphasizes a supportive and veteran-centered workforce, noting that approximately 85 percent of the housekeeping staff are veterans, creating a collegial environment rooted in mutual respect and shared commitment to veteran care.

This opportunity does not support relocation or recruitment incentives. Although the position requires on-site work with no telework or remote options, it offers federal employment benefits such as health insurance, retirement plans, paid time off, and other typical federal employee benefits that ensure a rewarding and secure career path. The VA also implements strict public health measures, including participation in annual influenza vaccination programs or exemptions, which underscores its commitment to safeguarding patient and employee health. This role ultimately appeals to individuals dedicated to public service, meticulous in their work ethics, and passionate about making a tangible difference in the lives of veterans by providing a clean, safe, and welcoming environment at the Stockton VA Medical Center.
