Job Description

The Richard L Roudebush VA Medical Center, located in Indianapolis, IN, operates within the Environmental Management Services Division, dedicated to maintaining a clean and safe environment for Veterans and their families. As a vital part of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs healthcare system, this facility ensures high-quality patient care through comprehensive support services, including meticulous housekeeping and custodial operations. The VA Medical Center is part of a nationwide network of medical centers committed to honoring America’s Veterans by delivering exceptional healthcare and fostering healing environments.

Working as a Housekeeping Aid (HKA) within the Environmental Services (EVS) Division at this VA Medical Center means contributing directly to the health and comfort of Veterans. This full-time, permanent position is based on the second shift, from 3:00 PM to 11:30 PM Monday through Friday, including weekends, with off days to be determined by the supervisor. The hourly wage ranges from $19.41 to $22.64 with no promotion potential indicated for the WG-2 grade level. This position is not telework eligible and requires onsite presence due to the nature of the custodial responsibilities which include both light and heavy cleaning tasks.

The role of the HKA-EVS Technician is integral to the patient care experience, as maintaining a hygienic and orderly environment within wards, patient rooms, offices, corridors, restrooms, and other medical facility areas is paramount. The job involves routine janitorial services such as sweeping, mopping, scrubbing floors using machines, vacuuming carpets and furniture, emptying trash, and replenishing restroom supplies. In addition, the position requires tasks such as cleaning light fixtures, windows, walls, and ceilings, often involving the use of ladders and power cleaning equipment. Special attention is necessary to manage spills promptly and ensure all patient care areas are safe and sanitary, thus supporting the overall health and well-being of Veterans.

Employees in this role primarily work indoors but may occasionally be exposed to various weather conditions when performing outdoor duties. Given the potential exposure to bloodborne pathogens and other hazardous materials, appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) must be used to ensure health and safety in compliance with Federal and VA regulations. The work demands physical stamina, including continuous walking, standing, stooping, kneeling, pulling, and pushing, with the capacity to handle heavy equipment weighing over 50 pounds. Good dexterity, coordination, and visual acuity are essential to detect dirt and debris effectively and carry out cleaning activities thoroughly.

The VA Medical Center emphasizes a Whole Health System approach, which focuses on empowering Veterans to take control of their health and well-being while creating personalized health plans within healing environments. Working here, HKA-EVS Technicians join a team where 85% of the housekeeping staff are Veterans, creating a supportive and mission-driven workplace culture. This position offers the opportunity to make a meaningful impact by ensuring that Veterans receive care in environments that promote dignity, safety, and comfort. Additionally, this role allows for the fulfillment of a public service career with comprehensive federal benefits and opportunities for professional development within the federal government framework.
