Job Description
The Pittsburgh VA Medical Center is a part of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, dedicated to providing superior healthcare services to Veterans and their families in the Pittsburgh and Aspinwall, Pennsylvania areas. The Medical Center is renowned for its commitment to support those who have served the nation, ensuring that Veterans receive exceptional care in a safe, clean, and supportive environment. As a federal agency, the Pittsburgh VA Medical Center offers a stable and rewarding career path with a strong commitment to employee benefits and workplace support, reflecting the values of public service and dedication to Veteran care.
This specific position is located within the Environmental Management Services division of the Pittsburgh VA Medical Center. It operates under the supervision of the Housekeeping Supervisor or designee and primarily focuses on janitorial and custodial services essential to maintaining a clean, safe, and therapeutic environment for Veterans. This role involves performing both light and heavy cleaning duties using both manual methods and powered cleaning equipment. Those selected for this position will be tasked with keeping various areas of the facility—including wards, patient rooms, offices, corridors, restrooms, and shower rooms—spotless and sanitary. The Housekeeping Aid position is critical in ensuring that the Medical Center meets high standards of cleanliness and hygiene, which are fundamental to the overall patient care experience.
The Medical Center actively encourages U.S. citizens, nationals, or those who owe allegiance to the United States to apply for this permanent, full-time role. The salary range for this position is competitive within the federal system, ranging from $18.96 to $22.12 per hour, with work schedules that vary by location, offering shifts during the morning, afternoon, and evening from Monday through Sunday. Candidates must be able to perform the physically demanding tasks required, which include frequent walking, standing, stooping, kneeling, bending, and the operation of industrial cleaning equipment that may weigh over 50 pounds.
As a Housekeeping Aid, you will be joining a team predominantly comprised of Veterans who share a commitment to service and excellence. The role is essential for maintaining the quality of life for patients by preventing the spread of infections and ensuring the environment is conducive to healing. Responsibilities include the thorough cleaning of floors, furniture, and surfaces; emptying trash receptacles and replacing liners; replenishing consumable supplies such as paper towels and hand sanitizer; cleaning and replacing needle boxes safely; and moving furniture and equipment as part of the cleaning process.
Candidates should have a keen eye for detail, excellent manual dexterity, and the ability to follow directions closely. They must be dependable and exhibit reliability and professionalism in every aspect of their work. This position requires passing a background check, a drug screening, and registering with Selective Service if applicable. There is a one-year probationary period during which the candidate's performance and conduct will be evaluated to determine suitability for continued federal employment.
Working for the Pittsburgh VA Medical Center means becoming part of a mission-driven organization that values diversity, integrity, and dedication to public service. Employees benefit from a comprehensive federal benefits package including health insurance, paid time off, retirement plans, and professional development opportunities. The VA encourages persons from all walks of life to apply, including those with volunteer experience, as it recognizes the value of diversified experience in serving Veterans effectively.
This opportunity is ideal for individuals passionate about community service and environmental care within a healthcare setting, who wish to contribute tangibly to the wellbeing of U.S. Veterans by maintaining an environment where healing and recovery can flourish. The role is not telework eligible and requires on-site presence to perform duties effectively. If you are committed to upholding the highest standards of cleanliness and safety and interested in working in a supportive federal environment, this position at the Pittsburgh VA Medical Center is an excellent career choice.
