Job Description
The Salt Lake City Veterans Affairs Medical Center (VAMC) is a federally operated healthcare facility dedicated to providing exceptional medical services to veterans in the Salt Lake City region. As part of the Department of Veterans Affairs, this institution is committed to upholding the health and well-being of those who have served the United States by delivering comprehensive and compassionate care in a secure and supportive environment. The Salt Lake City VAMC operates various specialized departments and services, including the Environmental Management Service, which is responsible for maintaining the cleanliness and hygiene of the medical center to ensure a safe atmosphere for patients, staff, and visitors.
The Environmental Management Service at Salt Lake City VAMC plays a critical role in infection control and facility upkeep through its team of janitorial and custodial professionals. The organization emphasizes standards of sanitation and cleanliness that meet stringent federal health guidelines and quality assurance protocols, contributing directly to patient care outcomes and operational efficiency. This dedication to maintaining a clean and sanitary environment reflects the institution’s broader commitment to excellence in veteran healthcare delivery.
The role of Housekeeping Aid within this service is vital in supporting the overall mission of the Salt Lake City VAMC. This permanent full-time position offers a salary ranging from $18.04 to $21.05 per hour, classified under the WG-2 pay scale. The Housekeeping Aid reports directly to the Housekeeping Supervisor or a designated official and works across all three shifts—first, second, and third—to deliver consistent cleaning and sanitation services throughout the facility.
The Housekeeping Aid is responsible for performing a comprehensive range of janitorial and custodial tasks essential for maintaining a sanitary and safe healthcare environment. These duties include sanitizing and disinfecting surfaces, removing waste, cleaning blinds, replacing curtains, washing windows and walls, dusting and polishing fixtures, discharge cleaning, sweeping, scrubbing, floor extraction, polishing floors, and applying floor finishes. These functions require attention to detail and an understanding of infection control measures, helping to prevent the spread of contaminants within the medical center.
Physical demands for this role are significant and include continuous walking, standing, stooping, kneeling, pulling, and pushing. The job occasionally requires the use of heavy powered cleaning equipment, such as wall washers and industrial buffers that may weigh over 50 pounds. The position also demands considerable dexterity, hand-eye coordination, and visual acuity to thoroughly remove dirt, dust, and debris from various surfaces.
The Housekeeping Aid operates with minimal supervision, managing complex and routine cleaning assignments in patient wards, rooms, storerooms, offices, corridors, restrooms, and shower rooms. The role not only contributes to the visual upkeep of the facility but also directly influences the health and safety standards that are imperative in a hospital setting.
This position is suited for individuals who are committed to maintaining high cleanliness standards, possess physical stamina, and have a strong dedication to supporting veterans' healthcare. As full federal employees, individuals in this role receive access to a comprehensive benefits package that includes health insurance, retirement plans, paid time off, and other employee programs, making the Housekeeping Aid position both professionally rewarding and supportive of long-term career growth within the federal government.
