Job Description

The Palo Alto VA Medical Center is a premier healthcare institution dedicated to providing comprehensive medical services to veterans in the Palo Alto region. As part of the Department of Veterans Affairs, the Medical Center upholds the highest standards in healthcare, offering a wide range of specialized services tailored to meet the unique needs of veterans. This federal establishment is committed to supporting veterans' health, well-being, and rehabilitation through cutting-edge medical treatments and compassionate care. The Medical Center is located in Palo Alto, California, and is recognized for its advanced facilities and highly trained healthcare professionals who strive to improve veterans' quality of life.

The Housekeeping Aid position within the Environmental Management Services Division plays a crucial role in maintaining the cleanliness and safety of the Medical Center's facilities. This role combines janitorial and custodial duties essential to the day-to-day operation of the hospital and patient care areas. The successful candidate will be responsible for a wide array of cleaning services, including textile distribution and inventory management, sanitizing and disinfecting surfaces, waste disposal, and cleaning fixtures such as blinds, curtains, and windows. The role also involves floor maintenance tasks like sweeping, scrubbing, polishing, and applying floor finishes to ensure the hospital environment remains hygienic and welcoming.

The Housekeeping Aid works with various cleaning equipment, including industrial buffers and pressure washers, and must be capable of performing minor maintenance and adjusting equipment for optimal operation. The position requires physical stamina and the ability to handle continuous walking, standing, stooping, kneeling, pulling, and pushing, occasionally dealing with equipment weighing over 50 pounds. Attention to detail, hand-eye coordination, and a commitment to maintaining health and safety standards are critical components of the job. The incumbent will perform cleaning duties in patient care areas, restrooms, nourishment kitchens, offices, and common spaces, including disinfecting reusable medical equipment when necessary, and replenishing hygiene supplies such as soap and hand sanitizers.

This is a full-time, permanent position under the competitive service with a pay scale of WG 2 and a salary range of $21.67 to $25.24 per hour. The work schedules are flexible, encompassing shifts that include weekdays, weekends, and holidays, with available shifts ranging from early morning to late evening and overnight hours. The position is not telework eligible and requires a physical presence at the Palo Alto facility. Due to the sensitive nature of the work environment, personal protective equipment (PPE) use is mandatory in specific situations where exposure to contagious diseases or hazardous materials is possible.

Embracing a role as a Housekeeping Aid at the Palo Alto VA Medical Center means contributing directly to the welfare of veterans by ensuring a clean and safe healthcare environment. This position offers a unique opportunity to serve those who have served the country, supporting their care with dedication to cleanliness, safety, and hygiene protocols. The role values reliability, conscientiousness, and a strong work ethic, making it a vital part of the Medical Center's mission to provide exceptional service to veterans.
