Job Description
Breaking Ground is a leading nonprofit organization dedicated to providing supportive and affordable housing to individuals experiencing chronic homelessness. Operating nearly 4,000 units of housing across New York City, with additional properties in upstate New York and Connecticut, Breaking Ground is committed to the mission that everyone deserves a home. The organization focuses not only on offering a roof over one’s head but also on supporting residents with comprehensive services aimed at promoting long-term stability and well-being. By combining housing with supportive services, Breaking Ground delivers a proven, cost-effective solution to chronic homelessness that fosters sustainable living and community integration.
Beyond housing, Breaking Ground operates innovative programs such as the Street to Home outreach initiative and transitional housing resources. These programs play a vital role in helping people who have been living on the streets the longest to transition indoors and maintain their new homes. This approach addresses the root causes of homelessness by offering both shelter and personalized support to help residents regain independence and a better quality of life.
The Housekeeper role at Breaking Ground is essential to maintaining the cleanliness, safety, and welcoming environment of their safe haven facilities. Reporting directly to the Facility Maintenance Supervisor, the Housekeeper is responsible for upkeep in common areas that include offices, multi-purpose rooms, roof decks, gardens, trash collection zones, lobbies, fitness rooms, and sidewalks. The position also involves cleaning client areas to ensure that the facilities are hygienic and comfortable for all residents and staff. This is an on-site position with a 35-hour workweek, making it ideal for individuals who enjoy hands-on, physically active roles within a supportive community-focused environment.
As a Housekeeper, you will perform a range of cleaning and maintenance tasks critical to the day-to-day operations of the housing facilities. Duties include sweeping, mopping, dusting, vacuuming, waxing, and buffing floors; maintaining sidewalks by removing leaves or snow; and cleaning individual units upon vacancy or as requested through work orders. Additionally, you will be responsible for sorting recyclables in accordance with New York City regulations, operating trash compactors, and setting up and cleaning up for meetings and events. Flexibility is key, as you may assist painters, engineers, and perform tasks at other facilities as needed. The role requires a reliable, dedicated individual with the physical stamina to stand for extended periods and move furniture or appliances when necessary.
Candidates with prior cleaning experience, especially in environments serving special needs populations, are encouraged to apply. While basic computer skills are a plus, they are not a requirement. Breaking Ground values diversity and is an equal opportunity employer committed to inclusivity and support for veterans and individuals with disabilities. Join Breaking Ground and contribute to a vital mission that transforms lives through housing and compassionate service.
