Job Description
The University of Maryland, College Park, is a renowned public research university recognized for its commitment to excellence in education, research, and community service. Established in 1856, it has grown into one of the leading institutions in the United States, dedicated to fostering innovation and academic achievement in a diverse and inclusive environment. The university serves a vibrant student population and employs a skilled workforce that contributes to its status as a major educational hub. With state-of-the-art facilities and a commitment to sustainability and operational excellence, the university provides a supportive and collaborative atmosphere for its staff and students alike.
Within this esteemed institution, the Facilities department plays a crucial role in maintaining the physical environment that supports learning and research. The department seeks a dedicated full-time Custodian to join their team, offering essential upkeep and sanitation services to ensure cleanliness, orderliness, and the overall aesthetic appeal of various university buildings. This role involves evening and weekend work hours, specifically Tuesday through Friday from 6:00 pm to 2:30 am and Saturdays from 4:00 pm to 12:30 am, offering a unique schedule that supports the continuous operations of the university.
The Custodian position is responsible for maintaining building interiors by executing a variety of cleaning tasks, such as washing furnishings, windows, tiles, fixtures, equipment, and floors. It also includes the sanitization and disinfection of restrooms to maintain a hygienic environment conducive to health and safety. This role requires the operation of standard cleaning equipment, including vacuum cleaners, buffers, and mops, as well as the handling and mixing of cleaning solutions as per specified instructions. The custodian is also tasked with managing waste by gathering and transporting trash to designated disposal areas, monitoring the condition of their assigned spaces, and reporting any maintenance needs or equipment concerns to the appropriate personnel.
Candidates suitable for this role will have at least one year of experience in educational, institutional, or non-profit settings, with a strong emphasis on the operation of commercial housekeeping equipment for floor maintenance tasks like stripping, waxing, sealing, and burnishing of vinyl, marble, and hardwood floors. This experience typically includes handling walk-behind and ride-on floor scrubbers. The university places high importance on the candidate's ability to follow directions carefully, work safely with chemicals, and carry out physical tasks such as lifting up to 25 pounds and wearing personal protective equipment.
This employment opportunity comes with a competitive salary range from $38,000 to $45,600 annually and includes a comprehensive benefits package. The role is integral to maintaining the university's standards of cleanliness and operational efficiency, contributing directly to the comfort and safety of its community. Applicants must complete an online application and may be subject to background checks and medical examinations to confirm their ability to perform the duties required. The University of Maryland is an Equal Opportunity Employer committed to diversity and inclusion, ensuring equal consideration for all qualified applicants.
