The role of Host or Hostess at Hotel Nikko San Francisco is a pivotal position focused on being the initial point of contact for guests arriving at the hotel’s dining establishments. This full-time, hourly role demands an energetic and personable individual with strong organizational and interpersonal skills to ensure guests receive a warm welcome and positive dining experience from arrival through departure. Responsibilities range from greeting guests warmly, including recognizing returning patrons by name, managing reservations, providing accurate wait times, and escorting guests to their tables or bar seats. The host also facilitates a smooth flow in the dining area by coordinating closely with wait staff on seating arrangements and availability.
This position requires a flexible schedule with availability during evening shifts, weekends, and holidays, reflecting the dynamic demand of the hospitality industry. Hosts will need to stand for extended periods and perform tasks involving walking, lifting, and reaching within a fast-paced environment. Knowledge or willingness to obtain California Food Handler Certification and Responsible Beverage Service certification is essential. Job Requirements
- At least one-year of experience in a service industry position
- Must possess a valid California Food Handler Certification and Responsible Beverage Service (RBS), or be willing and able to obtain both before hire
- Flexible schedule is required, must be available to work evening shifts including weekends and holidays
- Ability to make instant decisions in the dining room
- Must be able to stand for 8 hour shifts
- Have a genuine ability to interact with guests in a professional and courteous manner
- The position requires an energetic and enthusiastic personality as well as someone who can work well under pressure
Job Qualifications
- At least one-year of experience in a service industry position
- Prior guest service experience preferred
- Understanding of Open Table is a plus
- Knowledge of Micros or other POS systems is advantageous
- Hotel or hospitality experience is preferred
- Genuine ability to interact with guests in a professional and courteous manner
- Energetic and enthusiastic personality
- Ability to work well under pressure
Job Duties
- Greet all guests upon arrival and departure
- Welcome guest by name when he or she is a return guest
- Manage reservations
- Answer all incoming calls, record and distribute messages
- Escort guests to appropriate seats or bar areas
- Provide description of menus and food item to guests
- Provide accurate wait times and monitor waiting lists
- Provide menus and announce waiter or waitress's name
- Coordinate with wait staff about available seating options
- Maintain a clean reception area
- Cater to guests who require extra attention (e.g. children, elderly)
- Assist wait staff as needed
