The city's Department of Parks and Recreation plays a crucial role in maintaining the natural beauty and ecological health of these spaces, fostering a welcoming and sustainable environment for residents and visitors alike. As a municipal employer, the City of Birmingham offers a stable work environment with a strong emphasis on community involvement, employee development, and comprehensive benefits.
The role of Horticulture Maintenance Supervisor is a full-time position classified under Pay Grade 22, offering a competitive salary range between $49,753 and $77,188 annually. This position is ideal for an individual passionate about horticulture and landscape maintenance who possesses strong leadership skills and a desire to contribute to urban beautification efforts. As a supervisor, you will be responsible for managing, scheduling, and reviewing the work of employees involved in planning and preparing various types of plants, including flowers, shrubs, and trees. Your expertise will encompass plant propagation, care, and the diagnosis and treatment of plant diseases and pests, ensuring the health and aesthetics of the city's public landscapes.
The Horticulture Maintenance Supervisor works closely with horticultural crews to perform specialized landscaping activities such as pruning, weeding, fertilizing, and soil mixing. Additionally, this role requires oversight of pesticide applications, adhering to safety and regulatory standards to protect public health and the environment. A key component of the role involves developing project deadlines and coordinating multiple tasks to meet operational goals efficiently. Supervisory responsibilities include assigning work, monitoring progress, providing training and feedback, and resolving conflicts within the team to maintain high productivity and morale.
Beyond technical horticultural expertise, the role demands strong organizational skills and proficiency with data management tools for tracking inventory, scheduling tasks, and reporting. Interaction with internal and external customers is a routine aspect of the job, requiring excellent communication skills and a customer-focused approach. The work environment is diverse, comprising both indoor facilities like greenhouses and outdoor locations such as public parks and gardens, with tasks that occasionally require exposure to varying weather conditions, plant allergens, and chemicals.
The City of Birmingham prides itself on fostering an inclusive work culture that values equal employment opportunities and prohibits discrimination on any basis covered by federal, state, or local laws. Employees are offered a range of benefits including medical and dental insurance, a pension plan, paid holidays, sick leave, and vacation benefits. The city also emphasizes professional development, encouraging employees to stay current with industry standards, regulations, and best practices. If you are a motivated horticulture professional with supervisory experience looking to make a tangible impact on community beautification and green space management, this is an excellent opportunity to grow your career while serving the public.
