Job Description
The YMCA of Memphis & the Mid-South is a renowned nonprofit organization dedicated to strengthening communities through the pillars of youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. With a rich heritage rooted in the Christian mission, the YMCA continually commits to fostering an environment where individuals and families can grow together physically, mentally, spiritually, and socially. Across Memphis and neighboring Mid-South areas, the organization operates numerous programs and facilities designed to enrich lives and build stronger communities. The YMCA’s reputation as a trusted leader in community service is bolstered by its unwavering dedication to inclusivity, safety, quality programming, and nurturing all individuals, especially youth.
This part-time School Age Group Leader position plays a key role in advancing the YMCA’s mission by directly impacting the lives of children through structured, engaging, and safe before and after school and summer programs. Reporting under the School Age Site Director, the Group Leader is responsible for implementing daily lesson plans that align with YMCA guidelines and for creating a supportive and stimulating environment for approximately 15 to 20 children. This position involves hands-on leadership and active engagement with children during all program activities, both indoors and outdoors, with a focus on fostering their social, physical, spiritual, and intellectual development.
The Group Leader will assist in preparing and maintaining child-friendly program spaces ensuring all areas are clean, organized, and inviting. Essential to the role is a strong adherence to safety standards and risk management policies to safeguard the well-being of participants and staff. Furthermore, the person in this position will work closely with other site staff to maintain licensing standards and implement quality youth programming that reflects the YMCA’s core values: Caring, Honesty, Respect, and Responsibility.
Beyond child care responsibilities, the Group Leader will participate in staff meetings, in-service trainings, and contribute to planning curriculum that meets the YMCA’s high standards of youth development. This role demands excellent interpersonal and communication skills, professionalism, and the ability to handle confidential information sensitively. The ideal candidate will possess strong organizational skills and the capacity to manage multiple tasks effectively within a flexible split shift schedule, typically covering morning before school hours and afternoon after school care hours from Monday through Friday.
Working with the YMCA offers an opportunity to be a part of a mission-driven organization that prioritizes positive community impact and personal growth. The role requires completion of mandatory state and district background checks and certifications including CPR/First Aid and other health and safety trainings, ensuring compliance and the highest standards for child care. The YMCA environment is dynamic and may involve physical activities such as lifting, standing for extended periods, and exposure to various working conditions. Overall, the School Age Group Leader position provides rewarding work contributing to the developmental success and safety of children in the Memphis and Mid-South communities while upholding the YMCA’s commitment to service, leadership, and care.
