Job Description

Essentia Health is a leading integrated health system in the United States, renowned for delivering high-quality healthcare services and compassionate patient care. The organization operates hospitals, clinics, and specialty care facilities dedicated to promoting health and well-being across diverse communities. Essentia Health is committed to creating a supportive work environment where employees can thrive professionally and personally, emphasizing innovation, teamwork, and continuous improvement. The institution offers a comprehensive benefits package designed to support employees' health, financial security, career development, and overall work-life balance. This particular opening is for a position based at Building B - St Marys Medical Center, within the 2003950 SMMC 15-MED SURG department, part of the hospital's surgical unit.

The role is that of a Health Unit Coordinator, a vital position responsible for planning, organizing, and implementing non-nursing functions within the assigned unit to streamline workflow and enhance productivity. This position serves as the unit's administrative hub, facilitating communication and coordination among healthcare providers, patients, families, and staff. A key focus is providing excellent customer service and supporting indirect resident care activities to contribute to the overall efficiency and effectiveness of the medical team.

The Health Unit Coordinator handles a range of clerical and reception duties, including requisitioning supplies, equipment, and services as directed. Additionally, this role supports scheduling efforts and may be tasked with observing the telemetry monitor when indicated, ensuring timely communication of any changes to the patient’s caregiver. The position requires a proactive, organized professional capable of multitasking in a fast-paced hospital environment. Preferred candidates will have prior experience or training in a hospital or clinical setting, ideally as a health unit coordinator, medical secretary, or medical receptionist. While there is no formal educational requirement, completion of a relevant program or at least one year of experience or training in the healthcare environment is preferred.

This is a 0.6 Full-Time Equivalent (FTE) position with day and evening shifts on a rotating schedule, including every other weekend and holiday coverage. The role does not include call obligations. Essentia Health fosters a collaborative unionized workplace under SMMC USWA (SMUMS). The compensation range for this position is $18.15 to $27.04 per hour, reflecting the candidate’s experience and qualifications.

Essentia Health supports employees by offering medical, dental, vision, life, and disability insurance options. The organization also provides a 401(k) retirement savings plan with employer contributions, professional development opportunities like training and tuition reimbursement, and programs promoting physical, mental, and emotional wellness. Flexible scheduling and paid time off help employees maintain a healthy work-life balance. Overall, the Health Unit Coordinator role at Essentia Health represents an excellent opportunity for individuals dedicated to supporting patient care through administrative excellence while benefiting from a robust employee support system.
