Job Description

The hiring establishment is a municipal government agency dedicated to providing high-quality aquatic services and recreational activities to the community. This agency operates and manages several public aquatic facilities, offering programs designed to engage diverse groups including youth, adults, seniors, and special needs populations. Their mission emphasizes safety, community wellness, and educational outreach to promote aquatic safety and enjoyment. Established with a vision to enhance community health through aquatic recreation, the institution invests in well-trained personnel, modern facilities, and innovative program development to meet the evolving needs of its residents.

This position is classified as a full-time supervisory role within the Aquatics Division of the agency. The role primarily involves overseeing a team of aquatics staff responsible for delivering various aquatic services and programming. The specialist will supervise, develop, assign, review, and actively participate in staff work, ensuring programs serve all age groups including youth, inter-generational, adults, and elderly appropriately. The successful candidate will help establish program goals and objectives, coordinate aquatic program activities, monitor pool maintenance and water quality standards, and assist in hiring qualified aquatics personnel. This leadership role requires adherence to policies and procedures, involvement in budget preparation and administration, and promotion of health and safety within aquatic facilities.

The Aquatics Supervisor will play a key role in shaping aquatic programming targeting community wellness and safety. Responsibilities include planning, prioritizing, and directing staff in delivering instructional and recreational aquatic services aligned with community needs. The role demands strong skills in policy development, resource allocation, marketing of events and programs, and compliance monitoring to maintain operational standards. Furthermore, the incumbent will provide technical expertise on complex tasks related to pool operations and conduct workshops addressing health and safety concerns.

Safety is paramount in this position, which is designated as a safety sensitive role subject to random drug and alcohol testing. The individual must ensure operational compliance with relevant health and safety regulations, maintain water chemistry, manage maintenance schedules of aquatic facilities, and oversee incident prevention strategies. Supervisory duties also include ensuring all aquatic instructors and lifeguards are appropriately trained and certified, with ongoing employee development and staff scheduling. This role involves coordinating aquatic events such as swim meets, lessons, and rentals and collaborating with external agencies to optimize facility usage.

The position requires a Bachelor's degree in aquatics, physical education, emergency medicine, recreation, business administration, public administration, or a closely related field, coupled with at least five years of municipal aquatics program experience including two years in a supervisory capacity. Additional certifications related to CPR, first aid, lifeguard training, water safety instruction, and pool operations are essential. The applicant must possess a valid New Mexico Driver's License or be able to obtain one by the date of hire, and acquire a City Operator's Permit within six months of employment.

Working conditions for the Aquatics Supervisor span an office environment and poolside settings, with exposure to computer use, chemicals, heat, inclement weather, and slippery surfaces. Physical activities associated with this role include heavy lifting, prolonged walking, standing, swimming, bending, and kneeling. This multifaceted position demands strong leadership, operational expertise, and a commitment to safety to optimally serve the community's aquatic program needs.
