The Head Cashier role at Natural Grocers is a critical position ensuring the smooth operation of the store’s front end. The Head Cashier is responsible for overseeing cashiering activities, training and directing cashiers, and maintaining high standards of customer service. This role is essential for providing a positive and engaging shopping experience for customers, guaranteeing operational efficiency, and supporting the store's overall mission. The position requires leadership skills to manage and motivate cashier staff effectively while also directly participating in cashier duties during shifts. The Head Cashier must handle cash drawer verification, complete sales reports, process returns and overrides, and assist customers with inquiries and special orders.

The role includes training cashiers in customer service protocols, communication about the store’s loyalty program (N Power), and educating customers about various store initiatives including reusable bag donations and nutritional information. The Head Cashier coordinates tasks during slower periods, ensures that front end displays are well stocked and organized, and monitors completion of daily task lists. Although this position involves limited Manager on Duty responsibilities, it is not intended to replace the store manager but to support store operations pro-actively. The work schedule includes evenings, weekends, and holidays, demanding flexibility and a commitment to the store's operational needs. Job Requirements

High School diploma, GED or equivalent preferred
Experience in retail or grocery environment preferred
1 year of cashiering experience preferred
1 year of supervising others preferred
Ability to pass food safety training courses and maintain certifications
Ability to manage changing priorities and maintain focus
Excellent customer service skills
Proficient computer skills including MS Word, Excel and Outlook
Ability to lift weights up to 50 lbs occasionally and push or pull up to 100 lbs occasionally
Ability to stand, walk, bend, twist, reach, and perform physical tasks throughout the work shift
Availability to work evenings, weekends, and holidays
Must be able to work 40 hours per week
Must be able to work collaboratively with team members
Ability to take direction and follow through on tasks

Job Qualifications

High School diploma, GED or equivalent preferred
Experience in grocery or retail environment preferred
Natural foods background is a plus
1 year of cashiering experience preferred
1 year of supervising others preferred
Ability to pass food safety training courses and certifications as required
Ability to manage changing priorities and stay focused
Sense of urgency in completing tasks
Excellent customer service skills
Highly organized with great attention to detail
Ability to take direction and follow through
Must be cashier trained and able to count currency
Proficient in MS Word, Excel and Outlook

Job Duties

Providing World Class Customer Service and a positive customer experience as the number one priority
Exemplifying integrity, responsibility, and excellence and adhering to all policies
Training all cashiers and ensuring they communicate about the N Power program, notify customers about reusable bag donations, educate customers on Nutrient to Know About, and promote store seminars and events
Completing the Daily Sales Report (DSR) and cashier closeout responsibilities
Issuing and verifying cash drawers
Handling returns and overrides at the front end
Addressing customer complaints appropriately
Ensuring front end sets are full and well-maintained
Overseeing completion of the front end task list daily
Maintaining all registers binders
Directing cashiers to tasks during slow times
Performing general cashiering duties including running a cash register, bagging/boxing groceries, and providing carry out service
Monitoring, assigning and performing cart checks
Answering the telephone
Assisting in managing special orders
Monitoring, assigning and grinding nut butters
Learning product locations in all departments to direct customers
Participating in tagging, facing, rotating, cleaning, markdowns, stocking, and backstock as needed
Working a schedule based on store needs with evening, weekend, and holiday shifts
Not intended to be the overall Manager on Duty for the store
