Job Description

Federal Way Public Schools is a comprehensive public school district committed to providing quality education and services to its community. Located in Washington State, this district focuses not only on academic success but also on supporting students through various service programs, including nutrition services. These programs are essential in ensuring that all students receive nutritious meals that support their health and learning. The district operates a centralized Nutrition Services department responsible for preparing and delivering meals to multiple schools and sites efficiently and safely.

The Foodservice Truck Driver position within Federal Way Public Schools is a vital role that supports the delivery of meals and food supplies to schools and support sites as required. This position is not merely about driving; it encompasses a range of responsibilities that are integral to the smooth functioning of the foodservice program. The Foodservice Truck Driver is expected to drive safely on school premises and public roads, complying with all applicable state and local laws and the district's own protocols. Additionally, this role requires a strong commitment to customer service, as the driver represents the Nutrition Services department in various school environments. Friendly and positive interaction with school staff and students is essential, alongside working efficiently to adhere to established schedules.

This position involves multiple operational duties such as loading food transport units, operating truck and dock lift gates, delivering and picking up meals, supplies, and equipment, verifying orders, and maintaining temperature recording logs. The driver also supports warehouse functions by receiving deliveries, offloading vendor trucks, and organizing food storage. Maintaining the cleanliness and safety of the delivery vehicle is another key responsibility, as is promptly reporting mechanical issues to the relevant managers. The role demands physical stamina due to frequent lifting and handling of heavy items, requiring the ability to work in various temperature-controlled environments such as freezers and refrigerators. The position must adapt to changing weather conditions and operate safely in inclement weather, including chain up trucks when necessary.

Safety is paramount in this role, with the driver required to follow all safety procedures for securing transported food units and navigating both school and public road settings. The role also demands reliable communication skills, using tools such as two-way radios to coordinate efficiently with nutrition services and transportation personnel. This position reports directly to the Director of Nutrition Services or a designee, emphasizing its importance within the organizational structure.

Federal Way Public Schools offers this position on an at-will, on-call, substitute basis, with work assignments that can fluctuate daily, primarily following the school calendar. This flexibility requires candidates who are dependable, have good work attendance, and maintain a positive work ethic. The compensation aligns with the district’s Substitute Salary Schedule for Nutrition Services Truck Drivers. This role is non-represented, emphasizing individual responsibility, accountability, and adherence to district policies.

Cultural competence and equity awareness are integral in this position, reflecting the district’s commitment to fostering an inclusive environment. The Foodservice Truck Driver interacts with a diverse community, necessitating sensitivity to cultural differences and the promotion of equitable treatment among students, staff, and the public.

The position requires a Washington State Driver’s License with a Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) and air brake endorsement, ensuring the candidate is fully qualified to operate the required vehicles safely. Preferred qualifications include experience truck driving, familiarity with foodservice operations, a Food Handler's license, and forklift certification.
