Job Description
The City of Charleston, South Carolina, is renowned for its rich history, vibrant culture, and picturesque landscapes. As one of the most popular travel destinations in the United States, Charleston takes great pride in maintaining its charming streets and pristine public spaces. The City’s commitment to environmental stewardship and public service is evident through various programs, including its dedicated Environmental Services Department. This department is focused on ensuring that city streets, sidewalks, and public areas remain clean, safe, and accessible for residents, visitors, and businesses alike.
The Environmental Services Department, specifically within the Street Sweeping Division, plays a crucial role in upholding the city’s aesthetic appeal and public health standards. The Street Sweeping Division manages the daily operations related to the cleanliness of Charleston’s downtown and other commercial districts through state-of-the-art equipment and dedicated personnel.
This position offers a non-exempt employment status with a competitive annual salary ranging from $37,440.00 to $40,072.50, complemented by an hourly wage between $19.20 and $20.55. It presents an outstanding opportunity for individuals interested in public service, environmental health, and community well-being.
In this role as a Street Sweeper, you will be charged with maintaining the cleanliness and general appearance of the City of Charleston's streets and sidewalks, particularly in the Central Business District. Your work will directly impact the city’s public environment by removing debris, managing waste, and ensuring public areas stay safe and inviting. This role requires a hands-on approach to operate specialized equipment such as the Glutton street vacuum and also engage in manual cleaning efforts using shovels and push brooms.
Additionally, you will take part in snow and sand removal when necessary, highlighting the city’s preparedness for diverse weather conditions. The job may also necessitate driving city vehicles and trucks, including those towing trailers, to transport equipment and empty wastebaskets around downtown. You will work under various conditions that include walking and working outdoors in urban environments, necessitating physical stamina and attention to safety.
The role demands flexibility regarding shifts, offering two primary shift options: a day shift from Monday through Friday, 7:30 am to 3:30 pm, or an evening shift from Tuesday through Saturday, 3:30 pm to 11:30 pm. Additionally, employees must be willing to work weekends, holidays, and potentially extended or emergency shifts during severe weather events or other unforeseen circumstances.
This position provides an excellent platform for those seeking to make a tangible contribution to their community by contributing to the city’s cleanliness, environmental quality, and public image. Successful candidates will operate within a team committed to upholding Charleston’s reputation as a beautiful and welcoming city while also enjoying opportunities for steady employment and public service benefits.
