Job Description
The City of Charleston is a vibrant and historic municipality known for its rich cultural heritage, scenic streets, and strong commitment to maintaining a clean and welcoming environment for both residents and visitors. The city's government operates multiple departments to ensure the smooth and effective management of public services, one of which is the Environmental Services Department. This department plays a critical role in sustaining Charleston's visually appealing and safe community spaces, including its bustling Central Business District. Known for its dedication to public service, the City of Charleston offers a great working environment for those who want to contribute directly to the well-being of the community, with a commitment to equal employment opportunity and a robust set of employee benefits.
The available position within the Environmental Services Department, specifically the Street Sweeping Division, is a full-time, non-exempt role with an annual salary range of $40,033.50 to $42,198.00, which equates to an hourly wage between $20.53 and $21.64. Moreover, this position includes a compelling $500 bonus, with $250 paid on the first paycheck and another $250 after 120 days of employment. This role is pivotal in maintaining the cleanliness and overall appearance of the City’s streets and sidewalks, particularly in the downtown Charleston area, which is crucial for both aesthetic and public health reasons.
The Street Sweeper position involves the operation of street cleaning equipment such as the Glutton street Vac, as well as manual methods like shovel and push broom to effectively remove debris, dirt, and litter from streets, gutters, sidewalks, and catch basins. Employees in this role also contribute to snow and sand removal during inclement weather, as well as cleaning vacant lots and emptying public wastebaskets throughout the downtown area. The role may require some vehicle operation, including driving City trucks and trailers to transport cleaning equipment or city vehicles to service wastebaskets. Work is conducted primarily outdoors, and flexibility is necessary to meet the City’s operational needs, including working evenings, weekends, holidays, and emergency shifts during major storms or public safety events.
This position offers a great opportunity for individuals who enjoy working outdoors, take pride in contributing to the community environment, and are looking for stable employment with a municipality. The schedule is split into two main shifts: Shift A covers Thursdays and Fridays from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Shift B covers Saturdays and Sundays from 3 p.m. to 1 a.m. Candidates must be prepared to work in these designated shifts and have the physical ability to perform outdoor work in various weather conditions. The City of Charleston values its team members and strives to create an inclusive workplace where every employee feels valued and supported.
