This role is an excellent opportunity for individuals seeking temporary employment with meaningful responsibilities in custodial services. The Custodian (Learn & Earn) position is responsible for maintaining cleanliness and orderliness in designated laboratories, shops, office areas, and restrooms. This role demands consistent physical activity such as standing, walking, lifting, and exertion, with duties that include sweeping, dusting, mopping, buffing, and disinfecting various surfaces and fixtures. The custodian will also deal with trash and recycling management and ensure that designated spaces meet the highest standards of cleanliness and safety. The position includes exposure to various environmental conditions, including temperature extremes and scents, and requires adherence to safety protocols. This position is represented by the Metal Trades Council, and incumbents must pay monthly membership dues or agency fees. The Custodian will use equipment such as vacuums (both backpack and upright), mops, buffers, dusters, and cleaning supplies, often performing additional janitorial duties such as snow and ice removal at building approaches, waxing and polishing floors, and replenishing restroom supplies.

Job Requirements

  • Ability to successfully complete the performance of Team Cleaning Methods
  • Physical ability for repetitive exertion including walking, crouching, stooping, reaching, carrying, and lifting for long periods using assigned equipment
  • Exposure to elements such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises
  • Ability to read and accurately follow oral and written instructions to complete duties such as product directions, job orders, and memos
  • Basic math skills and ability to measure accurately using measuring devices
  • Test qualified in Reading/Vocabulary, Reading/Comprehension, Math/Basic Skills, Oral Directions, and General Reasoning
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a DOE 'Q' clearance
  • U.S. citizenship

Job Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred
  • Experience in custodial or janitorial work desirable but not required
  • Completion of Team Cleaning Academy desired
  • Completion of Safety Data Sheet (SDS) and Globally Harmonized System (GHS) Training desired
  • Completion of Bloodborne Pathogen Training desired
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Strong attention to detail and safety awareness
  • Good communication skills

Job Duties

  • Maintain in clean and orderly condition any designated laboratory, shop, or office area including restrooms
  • Complete tasks that requires continuous standing and walking, frequent exertion of 6 to 20 lbs and occasional exertion of 21 to 60 pounds
  • Perform general cleaning operations in and near any designated laboratory, shop, or office
  • Empty waste receptacles and sand urns into collection bins, and clean floor areas by sweeping, dusting damp mopping, and buffing
  • Perform other janitorial duties such as dusting window sills and moldings
  • cleaning stairs, glass doors, and panels
  • vacuuming and removing spots from carpets
  • wet mopping and buffing halls and lobbies
  • cleaning and disinfecting drinking fountains
  • and washing soiled areas of partitions, doors, and walls
  • Wax and polish floor areas where it is not necessary to move heavy furniture and equipment
  • Collect recycling paper and deposit in designated areas
  • Maintain restrooms in a clean and orderly condition by mopping floors
  • vacuuming carpets, drapes, windowsills, and other surfaces
  • washing basins, doors, partitions, and soiled areas of walls
  • clean furniture, mirrors, windows, venetian blinds, and similar items
  • and cleaning and disinfecting fixtures
  • Clean and fill soap, paper, and other dispensing equipment
  • prepare lists of needed janitorial supplies and stock supplies in designated areas
  • maintain walkways at building approaches by removing snow and ice, applying deicer, picking up paper and other debris, and cleaning away accumulated sand, gravel and mud
