The Custodian (Learn & Earn) position is responsible for maintaining cleanliness and orderliness in designated laboratories, shops, office areas, and restrooms. This role demands consistent physical activity such as standing, walking, lifting, and exertion, with duties that include sweeping, dusting, mopping, buffing, and disinfecting various surfaces and fixtures. The custodian will also deal with trash and recycling management and ensure that designated spaces meet the highest standards of cleanliness and safety. The position includes exposure to various environmental conditions, including temperature extremes and scents, and requires adherence to safety protocols. This position is represented by the Metal Trades Council, and incumbents must pay monthly membership dues or agency fees. The Custodian will use equipment such as vacuums (both backpack and upright), mops, buffers, dusters, and cleaning supplies, often performing additional janitorial duties such as snow and ice removal at building approaches, waxing and polishing floors, and replenishing restroom supplies.
