The role of a Gourmet Chef at Giant Eagle is a dynamic and multi-faceted position that plays a critical part in the success of the Central Kitchen and Market District operations. This role requires hands-on involvement in food preparation, ensuring food quality, merchandising, providing excellent customer service, and maintaining strict food safety standards. A Gourmet Chef at Giant Eagle actively participates in educating both associates and customers about food, enhancing everyone’s knowledge and appreciation for high-quality culinary products. The Gourmet Chef role is also pivotal in supporting the company’s profitability and growth initiatives. By effectively managing inventory, adhering to food cost budgets, minimizing waste, and executing precise recipe and merchandising guidelines, the Gourmet Chef ensures operational efficiency and helps maintain the financial health of the department. Additionally, the role includes collaborative efforts with management to support monthly inventory processes and participate in business meetings and training sessions. Ideal candidates for this role possess between three to five years of culinary experience and preferably hold credentials such as an advanced culinary degree, bachelor’s degree, or culinary awards/accreditations. Food safety awareness, including Serv-Safe Certification, is highly desired though not mandatory. The physical requirements entail the ability to lift up to 50 pounds, ensuring the candidate can handle the typical demands of a busy kitchen environment. Job Duties
- Actively support a culture of safety including food safety, team member safety and customer safety
- Display a commitment to learn about food and share food knowledge with fellow team members and customers
- Actively demonstrate appropriate suggestive selling techniques and provide active sampling opportunities when appropriate
- Actively participate in and promote an environment which embraces diversity, inclusion and respect for team members, customers, vendors and the community
- Maintain a safe and clean working environment by ensuring that all food safety, food holding, temperature and OSHA standards are met
- In conjunction with the Kitchen Manager/Prepared Foods Manager, manage inventories weekly, prepare food ingredients and products for efficient business management, assist Department Manager with monthly inventory taking process
- Meet or exceed budgeted guidelines for food cost percentage, minimize product waste and ensure production is followed strictly on a day to day basis
- Maintain accurate department records to ensure documentation of activities is available
- Participate in the preparation and production of catering and all food areas
- Monitor adherence to company policies, procedures and standards to ensure company requirements are met
- Follow strict recipe and merchandising guidelines to ensure company direction is followed
- Participate with the business group in quarterly reviews and training sessions and other functions at management's discretion
