The role of Global Real Estate & Workplace Lead at Whatnot is a critical executive position charged with defining and executing the company’s comprehensive real estate and workplace strategy as they scale their workforce from 1,000 to over 1,500 employees by 2026. This expansion will involve broadening their global footprint across the U.S., Europe, and Asia. Reporting directly to the Chief People Officer, this leader will partner closely with senior leadership teams across Finance and Operations to make strategic decisions about office space, manage lease negotiations, and oversee the construction, design, and facilities operations of Whatnot’s global offices. The position requires a strategic mind capable of balancing long-term vision with operational execution, a deep expertise in the complexities of real estate transactions, and strong financial acumen to ensure alignment with the company’s growth objectives and culture.

The successful candidate will manage all global real estate transactions including lease renewals, negotiations, expansions, and exits across multiple international hubs. They will direct new office buildouts, renovations, and expansions, ensuring projects deliver on time, within budget, and reflect Whatnot’s brand and cultural values. This role also includes establishing global workplace standards and designing scalable, efficient workplace operations that honor Whatnot’s remote-first culture while promoting collaboration and connection. Managing vendor relationships across architecture, construction, property management, and facilities services to uphold quality and cost control will also be essential. Beyond operations, this leader will lead a diverse global team of real estate and workplace professionals, maintaining seamless communication and reporting to executives on portfolio performance and strategic initiatives. The role offers flexibility to work from home or from key global hubs in San Francisco, New York City, Seattle, or Los Angeles, with the requirement that the team member lives within commuting distance of these locations. Compensation for this role ranges from $200,000 to $260,000 annually, reflecting the senior level of strategic, financial, and operational expertise required.

Job Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in real estate business administration or related field
  • 12+ years of corporate real estate or facilities experience
  • Proven expertise in lease negotiations and international real estate transactions
  • Experience leading large-scale construction and office buildout projects
  • Strong financial acumen with experience managing budgets and P&L
  • Demonstrated leadership experience managing a global real estate and workplace team
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills
  • Ability to work within a remote-first, hybrid work environment
  • Must reside within commuting distance of San Francisco New York City Seattle or Los Angeles offices

Job Qualifications

  • 12+ years of experience in corporate real estate facilities or workplace strategy at high-growth tech companies
  • Demonstrated success building real estate and workplace functions from the ground up
  • Deep expertise in lease negotiations real estate transactions and portfolio management across multiple geographies
  • Proven track record leading complex construction and design projects including buildouts renovations and new office launches
  • Strong financial and analytical skills including P&L management and long-range real estate modeling
  • Experience building and scaling teams including hiring and managing real estate project management and facilities professionals globally
  • Strategic mindset with strong operational execution skills
  • Exceptional stakeholder management and communication with ability to influence senior executives and translate business needs

Job Duties

  • Own Whatnot's global real estate strategy including footprint planning location selection and lease vs. build decision frameworks
  • Lead all real estate transactions including lease negotiations renewals expansions and exits across U.S. Europe and APAC
  • Direct design construction and buildout for new offices and expansions ensuring projects are on time on budget and aligned with company brand and culture
  • Establish and implement global workplace standards including design principles space utilization and operational efficiency
  • Build and manage vendor ecosystems for architecture construction FF&E property management facilities services and workplace operations
  • Oversee facilities operations including maintenance compliance vendor management space planning and workplace experience globally
  • Partner with Finance to develop and manage real estate and facilities budgets including forecasting capital expenditure and scenario modeling
  • Collaborate with Security IT Legal and People teams to integrate infrastructure workplace policies and compliance into real estate projects
  • Lead hire and develop global real estate and workplace teams including project managers facilities leads and workplace coordinators
  • Create executive-level reporting on real estate portfolio performance project status budget adherence and strategic recommendations
