The Gas Free Mechanic Specialist role at Colonna's Shipyard is a critical position responsible for ensuring the safe and efficient handling and maintenance of gas-free operations within the shipyard. This position supports ship repair activities by performing tasks that include disassembling, inspecting, cleaning, and reassembling tank apparatus, managing hose runs, and executing tank cleaning procedures in compliance with industry safety standards. The Gas Free Mechanic Specialist is tasked with removing hazardous materials such as gas, water, and oil from vessels and conducting thorough inspections and tests to verify gas-free conditions. Job Requirements

  • Must be able to access government facilities and be DBIDS eligible
  • Position requires obtaining and maintaining a DBIDS
  • U.S. citizenship required
  • Physical ability to lift and transport heavy equipment weighing no less than 20 pounds
  • Physical agility to perform tasks aboard ships including climbing ladders, working in extreme temperatures, confined spaces, and under industrial conditions
  • Ability to work aboard ships at sea for extended periods
  • Capacity to work in noisy, hot, humid, and dirty environments
  • Use of personal protective equipment including respirators, face shields, goggles, hard hats, safety glasses, and steel-toe boots
  • Ability to safely operate trucks, forklifts, and man-lifts
  • Ability to perform physical tasks including standing, walking, sitting, handling, talking, hearing, reaching, climbing, balancing, stooping, squatting, kneeling, twisting, and crawling
  • Willingness to work in areas with limited ventilation and frequent use of respirators

Job Qualifications

  • At least seven years of shipboard Gas Free experience
  • Knowledge of hand tools and instruments associated with the trade
  • Ability to follow OSHA and safety requirements
  • Ability to work effectively with others
  • Reliable, steady, and flexible worker
  • Ability to comprehend and follow simple instructions
  • Ability to enter and work in confined spaces such as manholes

Job Duties

  • Properly dissemble, inspect, clean and reassemble tank apparatuses including vents, valves, clean-out caps, clamps, loading/unloading lines, hoses, and gaskets as per tank cleaning procedures
  • Ensure that the right equipment is on site for the task
  • Remove all foreign materials from tanks safely and efficiently by scraping and scrubbing bilge tanks
  • Assess and execute hose runs from pier to designated pumping areas and monitor for related issues
  • Maintain good housekeeping practices by turning off machines when not in use, disposing of waste properly, and removing debris
  • Test spaces upon completion of cleaning when required
  • Open or assist with opening deep well inspection covers safely
  • Notify department manager and superintendent of any unsatisfactory conditions identified during operations
  • Follow CHT process control procedures and NAVSEA item 009-09/88
  • Analyze jobs to ensure proper and safe methods
  • Read and interpret work specifications, blueprints, manuals, and schematics
  • Plug, blank, and locate leaks or other problems
  • Flush pipelines to meet gas free conditions
  • Perform repairs on pumps and related equipment
  • Troubleshoot systems and correct problems
  • Fuel and defuel ships
  • Mark or tag materials with proper job numbers and identifying marks
  • Adhere to industry codes, regulations, and specifications
  • Read and understand Chemist and Competent Persons reports for job site safety
  • Perform quality assurance inspections on tank cleanliness
  • Provide training to new employees and assist foreman with manpower scheduling, maintenance, safety compliance, and project tracking
  • Wear personal protective equipment as required
  • Perform other duties as assigned based on workload
