Job Description
The California Science Center is a world-renowned interactive science museum located in the heart of Los Angeles in historic Exposition Park. As a premier educational resource and family destination, the Science Center is committed to stimulating curiosity and inspiring science learning in everyone by creating fun and memorable experiences. It features hands-on exhibits, educational programs, and a state-of-the-art IMAX Theater, drawing visitors from the greater Los Angeles area as well as from around the globe. The museum is open to the public seven days a week, 362 days per year, with free general admission to its four major exhibit areas. The organization values accessibility, inclusiveness, and leveraging science as an indispensable tool for understanding the world around us. The California Science Center fosters a diverse and inclusive environment, welcoming team members and guests from various backgrounds and experiences.
The Gallery Host position at the California Science Center plays a crucial role as a frontline ambassador within the Guest Services department. This temporary, part-time role offers an excellent opportunity to gain insight into the Science Center's vast range of career possibilities while making a direct impact on the visitor experience. Gallery Hosts work primarily in exhibit galleries and the IMAX Theater, interacting with visitors to create engaging, educational, and fun experiences that align with the Center's mission.
A Gallery Host's key responsibilities revolve around enhancing visitor engagement by initiating museum-related educational interactions, facilitating activities, and guiding learning experiences. The role demands an active, energetic individual who can continually move throughout the gallery space to maintain an inviting atmosphere. In addition to connecting guests with exhibits and programs, Gallery Hosts ensure the safety and well-being of visitors, staff, and collections by patrolling public areas, managing crowd capacity, and assisting during emergencies with established procedures.
The position requires flexible availability, including weekdays, weekends, holidays, and some evenings, as the Science Center operates 362 days annually. Team members generally work three to four shifts per week with the ability to work evening special events on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays being essential. Candidates who are bilingual, particularly fluent in Spanish, Korean, Japanese, Chinese, or American Sign Language, are highly preferred, although fluency in English is mandatory.
Gallery Hosts bring a friendly and approachable demeanor coupled with excellent organizational and interpersonal communication skills. They are team players who proactively greet and interact with guests, sharing information about exhibits, programs, services, and membership offerings enthusiastically. The role includes light cleaning and maintenance tasks related to exhibit spaces as well as using and caring for business assets like radios and keys.
Compensation for this position is $17.87 per hour, providing a rewarding part-time opportunity to contribute to an inspiring institution dedicated to science education and community enrichment. The California Science Center Foundation encourages applicants from diverse backgrounds and experiences, especially those who might not meet every qualification but are passionate about the role and organization. This is a unique chance to join a vibrant team that champions diversity and inclusiveness while delivering exceptional guest services in a dynamic museum environment.
