Job Description
Dog Tag Bakery, part of Dog Tag Inc., is a distinguished mission-driven organization dedicated to blending the art of baking with meaningful social impact. Located in the vibrant Georgetown neighborhood of Washington, DC, Dog Tag Bakery is not just a bakery; it is a community hub where veterans, military spouses, and caregivers are given the tools, skills, and opportunities they need to transition into successful civilian careers or entrepreneurship. By offering an innovative educational program that emphasizes hands-on learning and empowerment, Dog Tag Bakery champions both exceptional quality in its products and a profound commitment to social change. Each loaf, pastry, and cookie reflects this dedication, symbolizing a bridge between delicious food and service to those who have served our country.
The bakery's holistic approach sets it apart. It’s a place where meaningful service meets culinary excellence, with values deeply rooted in respect, empowerment, entrepreneurship, and ongoing community support. Team members at Dog Tag Bakery are part of a larger mission that transcends traditional baking roles — they contribute to creating a legacy that transforms lives through education, camaraderie, and career development. The organization fosters a supportive and inclusive environment where veterans and their families can thrive and connect with a community that understands their unique experiences.
The role of the baker at Dog Tag Bakery is designed for a passionate individual who loves baking from scratch and is eager to grow professionally within a dynamic and mission-oriented space. This full-time position offers the chance to develop advanced skills in baking and pastry decoration, including working with fondant for specialty cakes, producing seasonal baked goods, and designing visually appealing cakes and cupcakes for daily sales and special events. Bakers will handle all aspects of production, from measuring and mixing ingredients to ensuring the consistent quality and appearance of every product according to Dog Tag Bakery standards.
This position demands a strong attention to detail, the ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment, and a cooperative team spirit alongside the confidence to work independently. Bakers play a key role in helping the bakery stay innovative by contributing ideas for new flavor profiles and seasonal menu updates, aligning creativity with customer satisfaction. Operational responsibilities include maintaining clean and organized workspaces, adhering strictly to health and safety standards, and managing inventory effectively. The role also involves physical capability, requiring the ability to lift up to 50 pounds and the punctuality and reliability necessary for consistent performance.
Dog Tag Bakery offers a competitive salary range of $18 to $20 per hour, commensurate with experience, plus tips, within a full-time schedule of 30 to 40 hours per week. Candidates should be available to work weekends with shifts starting as early as 7 a.m. The bakery supports its employees with comprehensive benefits such as paid vacation, additional paid holidays, paid end-of-year closing in recognition of the team's success, medical insurance including health, dental, and vision coverage, life and accident insurance, and access to an Employee Assistance Program. Employees also have the option to participate in voluntary benefits like flexible spending accounts, disability insurance, and retirement plans. Added perks include free shift drinks, food discounts, and opportunities for ongoing professional training and career growth.
Ideal candidates will possess at least one year of industry baking experience or an equivalent culinary school background, with a preference for those skilled in from-scratch baking and cake decoration. Joining Dog Tag Bakery means becoming part of a passionate team dedicated not only to quality artisanal baking but also to changing lives and contributing to a profound social mission that honors those who have served.
